Fire (ファイア, Fire) is Mr. Game & Watch's up special move.

Overview[edit]

Two firefighters appear under Mr. Game & Watch and bounce him upwards using their trampoline. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4, the firefighters have a slight push effect around them. Mr. Game & Watch deals 6% damage and decent knockback on the way up before reaching the peak of his ascent and falling. Ironically, despite its name, the move does no flame damage.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mr. Game & Watch becomes helpless at the peak of the jump. Since Brawl, he instead opens a parachute to slow down his descent, allowing for much greater horizontal coverage for recoveries. The parachute can be canceled at any time by using any other move and will not cause him to become helpless, but it won't be able to used again until after landing. The combination of this and his down aerial, which makes him plummet at a very high speed in contrast, gives him a unique movement option. If the parachute is canceled as soon as it opens at the peak of the ascent, he will fast-fall, allowing for mindgames.

If a CPU Mr. Game & Watch uses this attack and fails to recover, it will often spam Judge until it surpasses the lower blast line. In Brawl, this can be used to perform the parasol glitch.

In Ultimate, the move has been heavily buffed, as the initial windbox has been replaced with a frame 3 damaging hitbox (now giving it the fastest startup out of all of Mr. Game & Watch's attacks). Combined with the move granting intangibility during its ascent and the ability to cancel the descent into any action, Fire is frequently considered the best out of shield option in the entire game: it has immense overall utility, such as granting an incredibly safe escape option, combo potential at a range of percents, and edgeguarding recovering opponents.

Origin[edit]

A game of Fire.

Fire is a Game & Watch game that released on December 4, 1981 as part of the Wide Screen series. The player takes the role of two firefighters trying to save people from a burning building. Various people jump out of various floors at various speeds, with the player's job being to use a trampoline to bounce them into the awaiting Ambulance on the other side of the screen.

The parachute introduced in Brawl as part of the move (also used in Melee as a neutral aerial) comes from the game Parachute, released on June 19, 1981 also as part of the Wide Screen series, in which person in a rowboat tries to catch skydiving paratroopers from a helicopter to prevent them from falling into water.

Trivia[edit]

  • Fire is the only special move that does not change Mr. Game & Watch's appearance in Ultimate.
  • Although the move has changed in Brawl onward to include the parachute from the game of the same name, it keeps the name of only the first action of the move even though a parachute does not appear in Fire.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Fire is tied for the fastest attack in the game, with the first hitbox starting on frame one. The only other moves in Melee that are frame one are Jigglypuff's Rest and Fox and Falco's Reflector.
