| Werewolves, humans who are either able or compelled to transform into a wolf or wolflike creature, are a staple of European folklore and horror fiction, and thus a natural presence in the ''Castlevania'' series. Werewolves originally appeared in ''Simon's Quest'' as common enemies, known as Wolfmen (a possible reference to the 1941 film ''The Wolf Man'', starring Lon Chaney Jr.) in the translation. Starting in ''Rondo of Blood,'' Werewolves became boss characters at the end of the normal route for Stages 2 and 2'. Upon defeat, the Werewolf reverts back into a naked human and expires. ''Symphony of the Night'' featured Werewolves as both a boss and an enemy.

| A notable werewolf in the series is Cornell from ''Legacy of Darkness'', being the first and only playable werewolf, fighting against Dracula and his minions to rescue his adoptive sister Ada, and rid himself of his dark powers.
