Super Smash Bros. introduces what has since been the only Pokémon-related item featured throughout the Smash Bros. series until SSB4:
* Poké Ball: The mass-producible, spherical item that, in any Pokémon continuity, can be thrown at a wild Pokémon to capture it and place it under the thrower's ownership, and which can subsequently be used by the owner as a storage device for that Pokémon that can send out and recall the Pokémon freely. The Poké Ball item featured in Super Smash Bros., like with each incarnation of the Poké Ball in future Smash Bros. installments, comes pre-loaded with one Pokémon randomly selected out of a pool of possible species, and when the ball is thrown and lands on a floor, the Pokémon inside emerges and briefly performs its own moves and behaviors before disappearing. The Super Smash Bros. version of this item can release one of thirteen different results, all originating from the First Generation: Charizard, Blastoise, Beedrill, Clefairy, Meowth, Onix, Hitmonlee, Koffing, Chansey, Goldeen, Starmie, Snorlax, and most rarely, Mew.

Unusually, they also hold their shields in place, which can result in a self-inflicted shield break (Jigglypuff will SD because of its unique shield jump). This is noticeable with the Wire Frames on the Legendary Pokémon event.
*Additionally, if a CPU is knocked in the air near Venusaur or goes above it to approach a player, it often immediately air dodges, even if the Venusaur can just be jumped over.

FailedPolicy.png This is a closed discussion about a failed proposed change on SmashWiki. It remains for archival purposes.

We have a concise graphical means of referring to both characters and stages. I want to make this true of items too. Here's an example of things that I would like to implement per item (since this is already kinda lengthy and it has sections of its own, let's vote in talk):

Pokémon (universe)[edit]

In Super Smash Bros.[edit]

Item[edit]

Super Smash Bros. introduces what has since been the only Pokémon-related item featured throughout the Smash Bros. series until SSB4:

  • PokeBallIconSSB.png
Poké Ball: The mass-producible, spherical item that, in any Pokémon continuity, can be thrown at a wild Pokémon to capture it and place it under the thrower's ownership, and which can subsequently be used by the owner as a storage device for that Pokémon that can send out and recall the Pokémon freely.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

Item[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Item[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. 4[edit]

Item[edit]

  • PokeBallIconSSB4.png
Poké Ball: The Poké Ball was announced to make its comeback in the Comet Observatory trailer for Super Smash Bros. 4.
