A self-destruct (abbreviated "SD") is the name for a "suicide" in SSBM and occurs when a character dies on his or her own without offensive interference by another character (interference by environment damage such as cars can still cause a self-destruct). Self-destructs subtract 1 point from time battles and 500 points for bonus, remove one stock in stock battles, and halve coin amounts in coin battles. Killing a team mate also counts as a Self-Destruct.
