Apex 2016 was the seventh edition of the Apex series, which took place from June 17th to June 19th of 2016.[1] Apex 2016 was the first Apex event to be run under the new management of the Bifuteki crew, following Alex Strife's removal from the team in 2015.
Although Apex 2015 had previously featured among the largest Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 tournaments in history, Apex 2016 featured a precipitous drop in attendence compared to its predecessor; this can potentially be attributed to controversies surrounding the tournament series starting with Apex 2015, as well as poor scheduling due to Low Tier City 4, DreamHack Summer 2016, and Snosa II all being scheduled for the same weekend as Apex 2016. Compared to Apex 2016, Smash 64 fell from 188 entrants to 55 entrants, Melee notably went from 1,037 entrants to only 159 entrants, Smash 4 fell from 837 entrants to 309 entrants, and the Brawl event was completely cancelled due to poor turnout. The poor attendence extended to games outside of Smash, with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, and Mortal Kombat X all having their respective events cancelled. Nevertheless, several top Japanese players, specifically Nietono, RAIN, and Umeki, travelled to Apex to compete in the Smash 4 event.
