Apex 2016 was the seventh edition of the Apex series, which took place on June 17th-19th, 2016.[1] This was the first Apex event under the new management of the Bifuteki crew, following Alex Strife's removal from the team in 2015.
Although Apex 2015 had previously featured among the largest Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 tournaments in history, Apex 2016 featured a precipitous drop in attendence compared to its predecessor; this can potentially be attributed to controversies surrounding the tournament series starting with Apex 2015, and to poor scheduling, as Low Tier City 4, DreamHack Summer 2016, and Snosa II were all scheduled for the same weekend as Apex 2016. Smash 64 fell from 188 entrants to 55, Melee notably went from having 1,037 entrants to having only 159 entrants, Smash 4 fell from 837 entrants to 309 entrants, and the Brawl event was completely cancelled. The poor attendence extended to games outside of Smash, with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, and Mortal Kombat X all having their respective events cancelled.
