BEFORE YOU EDIT: Keep in mind, this portion of the article is referring specifically to "Brawl", not the SSB series as a whole. Even though Marth and Ness were primary characters in previous games, they were replaced by Ike and Lucas as such in Brawl. In Brawl, Ike and Lucas are the primary characters and Marth and Ness are secondary "throw-back" characters (Much the same way Fox's moveset was reworked in  Melee and Falco was used to bring back Fox's classic moveset). Therefore, even though Ike and Lucas maybe considered the semi-clones in the SSB series in general, in "Brawl" it is only accurate to say Marth and Ness are the semi-clones of Ike and Lucas. It was listed this way intentionally, please do not attempt to correct it by reversing the orders.

How aren't they? Kirby and Jigglypuff have similar appearances and share the same "multi-jump" ability but other than those their similarities end there. Whereas Ike and Marth share the same basic special moveset. Granted, the moves have different appearances and vary in their effects but that's true about the moves of all the semi-clones. Ike and Marth's special moves all behave in the same basic way, and are performed with the same button layout. They're really one of the best examples of "semi-clones". I honestly don't understand how you could possibly not see them as semi-clones. --~~~~

Clone characters are playable characters whose entire movesets (both normal and special) are identical to another's with only minor variation and/or effects. Creating a larger roster is usually the reason for the creation of clone characters but unique movesets are more desirable. While often thought as one by many due to the similarity of his special moves with those of Mario's, Luigi is not considered a clone (since Melee) due to his unique normal moveset (and side special move in Melee). Clone characters' portraits appear next to and slightly lower to those of their counterparts on the Melee character select screen. Only unlockable characters in the Smash Bros. series are considered clones, with the exclusion of Marth/Ike and Ness/Lucas in Brawl.

Masahiro Sakurai previously suggested that any returning clones in Brawl might be "decloned" with new movesets. Upon the release of the game, (with the exception of Toon Link) this has been confirmed to technically be the case for the most part, in that no characters share complete movesets as in Melee . However, to the dismay of some fans, several characters remain "semi-clones" -- characters whose design is based off of others and share variations of special movesets and fighting styles while still retaining other unique individual moves. This is also commonly known as "Luigification". Prior to Brawl, Luigi was the only character of this kind, hence the name.
