Character description
Dr. Mario is simply Mario in a doctor's uniform, equipped with his powerful "Megavitamins" to fight against viruses. He originated in the 1990 NES game Dr. Mario.

Special Moves
In the original, Dr. Mario was briefly mentioned in Mario's biography, among the other things he used to be.
*B: Megavitamins
*Side B: Super Sheet
*Up B: Super Jump Punch
*Down B: Dr. Tornado

Pros
*Good edge-guarder via back aerial and Cape
*Pills help control approaches
*Can chain throw some characters and down throw to forward aerial as a staple KO
*Good aerial game
*Great wavedash
*Good SHFFL
Cons
* Lacks range
* Very short recovery (one of the worst)
Recovery Improvement
Dr. Mario appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the 13 new characters introduced.  He is a secret character and considered to be a "clone" of Mario's (in that his moveset is generally just an altered version of Mario's).  Dr. Mario is a slower, yet stronger version of Mario. While not many significant differences exist between the two characters, there are a few - the main one being that rather than shooting Fireballs as his Neutral B move, he throws Megavitamins.
*Forward-B (Cape): Gives a slight lift. This can be used once in the air to gain altitude, unlike Mario's-- which may be used more than once.
*Down-B (Dr. Tornado): If you mash B rapidly while Doc is spinning, he'll get a slight lift. Hold the Control Stick towards the stage afterwards so the slight altitude gained is not wasted. This can also be used only once in the air.

Trophies
Techniques
Dr. Mario, like the rest of the characters, has three different trophies dedicated to him. The Viruses from the Dr. Mario game also appear as a trophy.
*Pill Rush: Bombard the enemy with a wall of Pills exerted after a short jumped into a fast fall and at ground point. Repeat this three Pill fire sequence while approaching the opponent to render them almost stunned. This technique does not work as well for Mario, due to the Pills added weight and higher bounce.
*Wall of Pain: Use of backward aerials to effectively keep the opponent off the edge.Doctor Mario can use multiple back aerials off the edge making him an excellent edge guarder.
*Up-B Cancel: Doctor Mario is the only character able to cancel his up-b attack. Within the first four frames, activate the move to a certain direction and quickly move the control stick to the opposite direction. The opponent will be sent up at a trajectory based solely on their weight and Doctor Mario will  be able to move.

Differences
See Also
Dr. Mario and Mario aren't exactly the same. Here are some differences:
*Dr. Mario (SSBM)
*-The Super Sheet is longer than the cape and has less lag, making it not as useful as Mario's cape for recovery.
*-His pills do more damage than the fireballs.
*-His Tilt Down A sends opponents behind him.
*-His Fair isn't a Meteor Smash like Mario's.
*-It is harder to break out of his Down B attack.
*-He is slower and stronger.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Dr. Mario, along with Pichu, Roy, and Mewtwo, does not return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. A reference to him is made on the stage PictoChat, with his main theme (called "Dr. Mario (Melee)") is accessible as a starter song. Hacking shows that there is leftover data in Brawl for Dr. Mario. Some take this as signs of an planned character, but it was more likely there for referential purposes by the programmers, or data imported from Melee.
