RJM (also known as Randall00) is a Canadian smasher and tournament director from Calgary, Alberta and is a member of the Pro Impact Players. He is primarily responsible for initiating the first active and organized regional smash circuit, as well as administering Pro Impact BI-WEEKLY Smash locally in the city. At its final publication, RJM was ranked 16th on the CCSC Power Rankings.
Background
RJM and his fellow crewmates were avid Super Smash Bros. 64 players from the very earliest days of the game and developed a reasonable amount of talent for it, though a considerably larger passion. As a dedicated Luigi main, RJM would take a leave of absence from Smash in general upon the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, observing with total disgust how the character had been stripped of any horizontal recovery distance on his third jump. In the interim (all well before competitive play had risen to the forefront), the other Pro Impact Players played the game vigorously for at least one year after, pre-dating the very name of the crew itself by over three.
RJM would ultimately return to Luigi for the Gamecube's incarnation of Smash and spent four years playing the game regularly without ever picking another character. It wasn't until late 2005 that he discovered the competitive nature of the game and the subsequent tournament scene that had been built all over the world that he would learn about the true depth of Melee and finally admit that Luigi's build had indeed improved since the console upgrade.
Now an active contributor to the community at large, RJM was responsible for the initiative to build the Central Canada Smash Circuit as well as host bi-weekly tournaments in Calgary, Alberta; a community that was previously void of any competitive smash. Still a dedicated Luigi player, he regularly travels around the province to take in other regional gaming events and maintain strong ties with community leaders in other local areas.
At Melee's End
In December of 2007, RJM hosted At Melee's End: Pro Impact CCSC Championship, the final major regional SSBM tournament in Canada. Taking place over the course of two days, the event drew players from all across the country including ManLi, Fogel, Blunted_Object10 and SuperBoomFan.
Shouldering the vast majority of the burden of hosting on his own shoulders, RJM cancelled Pro Impact BI-WEEKLY Smash several weeks prior to At Melee's End to allow for ease of time management in making the upcoming event a success. With the support of the Central Canada Smash Circuit and the willingness to travel amongst out-of-state players, the tournament was a success however RJM has stated that he will "not be hosting another one quite like it, or at least not with the same expectations."
On Super Smash Bros. Brawl
A vocal critic of the simplification of Brawl's competitive engine, RJM's tournament direction for the new game was unexpectedly delayed in light of the divide in the community between die-hard Melee players and new Brawl enthusiasts. Though an announcement was made regarding Pro Impact Tri-Weeklies, the tournaments never came to be and RJM drifted into dormancy in competitive smash activity.
Trivia
- Though he typically competes under RJM, most players know him simply as Randall.
- FastFox and other fellow Edmontonian smashers were responsible for naming Randall the Cloud, but interestingly, this occurred before Randall himself had ever been known to their local community. He is reported to have personally apologized on the cloud's behalf on multiple occasions for cloud-related self-destructs, etc.
- Randall was also the sole Calgary representative in the TransCanada Tournament's East Coast vs. West Coast crew battle.
