Despite their success in creating entertaining and flashy combo videos, the crew has been criticized for many reasons. Many of their detractors made allegations towards them in the past, most notoriously from skeptical players posting on [[GameFAQs]] or [[Smash World Forums]], stating that almost all of their combo videos were staged and the combos done in them were not possible in a normal match, as they required a total lack of player skill to fall into them. For example, some cited that in SilentSpectre's {{SSBM|Captain Falcon}} combo video, "Silence," the player in question used a massive amount of [[Raptor Boost]]s into [[Knee Smash]]es; competent players in tournament, they argued, would not be hit by Raptor Boosts at all, and would instead either [[DI]] out of the move or capitalize on Falcon's ending lag and [[punish]] accordingly. Despite these attacks, many members from the crew still attest that all of their combos are real and done in serious settings, with the tournament results to back up their claims. The crew has also been criticized for having an inappropriate name; many are turned away from the group just by looking at their handle, "Death By Rape," which suggests a huge lack of maturity amongst the members as it implies that they do not know about the serious negative social connotations of the phrase they use as their title. Due to this, some immediately look down on the group as immature or unacceptable, despite the members' histories as relatively amicable people who are friendly with many top Smashers and help set up large tournaments for the ''Melee'' community.

This group had also been on the receiving end of massive amounts of hate after one of their players, {{Sm|Zelgadis}}, [http://www.smashboards.com/threads/a-solemn-moment-for-dbr-and-the-melee-community.307383/ stole $6,000 from the GENESIS 2 prize pool]. When caught, Zelgadis did not immediately confess, but rather tried to hide his actions until his own crew eventually called the police on him to return the money; Zelgadis still refused to back down, however, as he tried to claim that it was an accident until further questioning. The rest of the crew asserted that they did not endorse this action and that they hoped it would not stain their reputation, but to this day Death By Rape is still largely infamous for this scandal which ended up staining not only their reputation, but the reputation of the entire ''Melee'' community as a whole.
