:You may notice the words "unofficial" and "fan fiction". People have been using the term "Smashers" to refer to the playable characters since the Melee days - I myself have been using it for over four years (estimated). On the other hand, when people are talking about things in an external context (talking about strategies or game physics or stuff) they tend to say "character".
