Green Hill Zone is the stage that represents Sonic the Hedgehog in the game. It is unlocked as soon as Sonic himself is unlocked. The midsection is a half-pipe that crumbles away if it attacked too much during the course of the fight. There are also checkpoint lampposts that can be spun around to hurt other players. In the background is a giant loop-de-loop, an icon of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Supporting Sonic characters Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Silver the Hedgehog can be seen making their cameo appearances as they run to get through the loop.
Green Hill Zone is a Sonic themed stage appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This stage is retro style like the Mushroom Kingdom stage, and is based on the first level of the game Sonic the Hedgehog. The terrain is flat on the far left but dips into a curve that slants down then upward towards the right. Occasionally save points will come out of the ground and turn red, and if the save point's globe hits the player, it throws them back like a Flipper would. A recognizable loop from the Sonic games stands in the background (which Tails, Knuckles, and Silver occasionally run through) and a waterfall behind it. Various other terrain from Green Hill zone is evident, like sunflowers, palm trees and a checkered-patterned ground. Portions of the center ground can also be destroyed, creating dangerous pits.

The first stage in the first Sonic game, Green Hill Zone is as iconic to Sonic as World 1-1 is to Mario. Some variation of it appears in nearly every 2-D Sonic game. A full 3-D version of it appears as a secret unlockable in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle with a design not to different from that seen in Brawl.
