'''Mega Man''' ({{ja|ロックマン|Rokkuman}}, ''Rockman''), also known as '''Rock''' ({{ja|ロック|Rokku}}, ''Rock'') and occasionally '''Mega''' in English translations, is the titular character and a main protagonist of the {{uv|Mega Man}} series by [[Capcom]]. He is a robot who was built by Dr. Light as a lab assistant, but when the world was thrown into danger by the evil Dr. Wily, Mega Man volunteered to be upgraded into a fighting robot to fight for peace. He was first announced as a playable character for ''[[Super Smash Bros. 4]]'' in the [[E3]] 2013 [[Nintendo Direct]].

Mega Man was designed by Akira Kitamura and Keiji Inafune. He is a highly-advanced fighting robot created by the brilliant scientist Dr. Thomas Light, though he was not born this way. In the year 20XX, Dr. Light created two household robots: a boy named Rock, designed as a lab assistant, and a girl named Roll, designed for house work. He also made at least six other robots called Robot Masters who worked in industrial capacities. One day, Dr. Light's former colleague, [[Dr. Wily|Dr. Albert Wily]], suddenly kidnapped his Robot Masters and reprogrammed them into his servants in a bid to conquer the world. Struck by this injustice, Rock volunteered to be modified into a fighting robot in order to stop Dr. Wily's evil robot army. With his new blue armor and Mega Buster, Rock became Mega Man. As Mega Man, he would thwart Wily's plans time and time again across the series.

Mega Man's main weapon is the Mega Buster, a system that can convert one of his hands into a powerful energy cannon. Starting in ''Mega Man 4'', the Mega Buster can often be charged to release a more powerful Charge Shot. Another of his main skills is the ability to slide along the ground. Mega Man's most impressive ability, however, is the Weapon Change System, which allows him to copy the powers of the Robot Master bosses he defeats. These Special Weapons then prove useful for taking out enemies or traversing areas, and are strong against another Robot Master weak to that particular weapon in a rock-paper-scissors system.

Mega Man is a strong-willed youth. He is consistently shown to have a strong sense of justice, highly valuing peace. These values were what led him to be converted into a fighting robot in the first place, and the games stress Mega Man's never-ending fight for peace. It should be noted that these values were encoded by Dr. Light, and Mega Man canonically does not have free will beyond the constraints of his programming (this limitation eventually inspired Dr. Light to create Mega Man's successor, [[X (Mega Man)|X]]). The ultimate fate of Mega Man between the "Classic series" and the "X series" is unclear, however, as there are no traces of his existence by the events of ''Mega Man X'', which takes place a century after the original series.

Mega Man has a large group of allies and companions who help him on his adventures. Dr. Light and Roll often serve advisory roles, while other robots help him more directly. Rush, Mega Man's robotic dog, serves as transportation for him by transforming into tools such as a spring or jet, or by directly merging with Mega Man. Other robot helpers include Eddie, a small robot that distributes items, Beat, a bird robot that attacks enemies and can save Mega Man from falling into pits, and Auto, a robot assistant of Dr. Light who creates parts and upgrades for Mega Man.

Mega Man has a secret older brother, [[Proto Man]], who was created as his prototype but fled from home long ago. He is a lone wolf who sometimes takes the role of Mega Man's mysterious mentor, usually fighting alongside him. Mega Man also has an aggressive arch-rival, [[Bass]], who was created by Dr. Wily to surpass Mega Man. However, Bass is not entirely loyal to Dr. Wily and his arrogance leads him to butt heads with his creator; he has even been known to fight alongside Mega Man on the rare occasion when their goals intersect.
