Phoenix Wright (成歩堂 龍一, Ryuichi Naruhodo) is the main protagonist of Capcom's long running Ace Attorney series. A rookie defense attorney to start, Phoenix grows into a legendary figure known far and wide through the legal world as one of the greatest defense attorneys to ever set foot into a courtroom.
Origin[edit]
Not much is known about Phoenix's past, as only a few bits and pieces have been shown. What is known is that in elementary school, Phoenix was accused of stealing fellow classmate Miles Edgeworth's lunch money. Everyone, including the teacher believed in Phoenix's guilt, and held a class trial to accuse him of such. It was only once Edgeworth himself stood up for Phoenix by saying that his classmates had no proof Phoenix was the culprit, along with fellow classmate Larry Butz backing him up, that the class gave up accusing Phoenix. From then on, the three boys were inseparable friends.
Upon making it to university, Phoenix actually began as an art student, only pursuing law on the side. However, this all changed the day he was accused of murdering Doug Swallow. After being defended by Mia Fey, who proved that the true culprit was Dahlia Hawthorne, Phoenix's girlfriend at the time, Phoenix was inspired to study law full-time. Two years later, he ended up becoming a lawyer in his own right, mentored by the same woman who defended him all those years ago and beginning his law career at the Fey & Co. Law Offices.
His first case was defending his childhood friend Larry Butz from a murder accusation. In his very next case, he would be investigating the death of his mentor Mia, while defending her younger sister Maya Fey, who stood accused of the murder. Upon successfully proving Maya's innocence, the two became fast friends, and Maya became Phoenix's legal assistant at the newly christened Wright & Co. Law Offices. The two would go on to work many cases together, taking on prosecutors such as Manfred von Karma, a legendary prosecutor who had never lost a single case in his 40 years of practice, Franziska von Karma, the daughter of Manfred von Karma, Godot, a mysterious prosecutor who seemed to have a grudge against Phoenix, and even Phoenix's old childhood friend who stood up for him all those years ago, Miles Edgeworth himself.
After a long and storied law career, Phoenix's reputation as an honest and just attorney came crashing down the day he was asked to defend Zak Gramarye in court on charges of murdering his mentor, Magnifi Gramarye. Partway through the trial, Phoenix presented a page from Magnifi's diary that seemed to prove his client's innocence. However, unbeknownst to him, the page was actually a forgery, and he was called out on this by the prosecutor in the case, Klavier Gavin. Upon being exposed for presenting forged evidence, Phoenix was disbarred with immediate effect, thus starting what came to be known as the "dark age of the law", where trust in the legal system, and defense attorneys especially, was at an all time low. No longer an attorney, Phoenix spent the next seven years raising Zak's daughter Trucy as his own while working as a piano player at the Borscht Bowl Club. At this point, the Wright & Co. Law Offices were renamed to the Wright Talent Agency, working to represent Trucy as a stage magician.
Throughout those seven years, Phoenix worked to try and prove who really ordered the forgery that he had mistakenly presented, eventually settling on his "friend" Kristoph Gavin as the culprit. Around this time, he also took fledgling defense attorney Apollo Justice under his wing, forming the Wright Anything Agency as they now worked as both a talent agency and law office. With Apollo's help, Phoenix managed to prove that Kristoph was the true culprit behind many crimes, including the forgery that Phoenix had presented seven years ago.
Cleared of the crime of forgery, Phoenix retook the bar exam and was reinstated as a defense attorney. During this time, he met Athena Cykes, a promising law student in Europe who was looking to become a lawyer. Upon finishing her studies, Phoenix invited her to join the Wright Anything Agency, and thus the firm gained a formidable team of three lawyers. His reputation as a legendary attorney now restored, Phoenix took the role of mentor to Apollo and Athena alike, helping them learn the ropes of being a defense attorney while also taking the occasional case himself.
