Online Tourney (オンライントーナメント, Online Tournament) is an Online mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, introduced in version 4.0.0. The mode sets up a Tourney bracket of up to 64 players, who fight each other through the internet, with the player earning a number of spirits depending on their performance. It is the successor to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's Tourney mode.

There are three distinct types of Online Tourneys, which differ based on the rules used:

  • 1-on-1 Tourneys and Smash Tourneys are based on 1-on-1 and 4-player free for all matches, respectively, with the earlier restricting the number of players to 32. Both formats are hosted separately with a duration of 2 days each. After the duration is up, the last format will be immediately superseded by the other. The prize for participating in these tourneys is typically spirit points, snacks, and spirits, with higher placements rewarding more and higher value rewards. The first Online Tourney of either type was a 1-on-1 Tourney on July 31st, 2019, coinciding with the release of the 4.0.0 update, and a Smash Tourney succeeding it on August 2nd, 2019.
  • Event Tourneys are based on a specific theme, much like Spirit Board events. Event Tourneys are hosted alongside any active 1-on-1 Tourney or Smash Tourney, and differs from them by only allowing certain fighters, items, or stages to be used. Their durations are up to 3 days instead of 2.

Event Tourneys

Every few weeks, a special tourney opens for a limited time and is accessible next to the regular tourney icon. This special tourney uses unique rules that typically restrict the available fighters, stages, items, or rulesets according to a specific theme. There are no special rewards for winning an event tourney besides advancing farther resulting in more spirit points, snacks, and more powerful spirits. These are just meant to be fun changes of pace that keep the game interesting or commemorate some kind of event like a new game or anniversary.
