The following is a list of all swords used by playable characters as weapons in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Master Sword[edit]

The Breath of the Wild iteration of Link wielding the Master Sword in Ultimate.

The Master Sword is a longsword from The Legend of Zelda universe. It has appeared in many games of the Zelda series as Link's most powerful sword and is one of the few weapons capable of defeating Ganon. The backstory established in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword shows that it was created from the Goddess Sword and is inhabited by the sword spirit Fi. It is generally found in the Pedestal of Time, although its location varies by game.

In Smash, the Master Sword appears in many roles. The Master Sword is wielded by adult Link in all games of the Smash series, and its appearance varies by game. In SSB and Melee, it is based on its appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; Brawl and SSB4, it is based on its appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess; in Ultimate, it is based on its appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Toon Link wields the Master Sword as well, based on its appearance in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker; his version is shorter and weaker, but swings much faster. Mii Swordfighters can also wield the Master Sword as part of the downloadable content costume based on Link.

In Melee's Adventure Mode, five pedestals with a Master Sword appear in the Underground Maze, indicating a fight against Link. In Ultimate's World of Light, the Master Sword appears in the Sacred Land sub-world. There is also a Master Sword trophy in Melee.

The Master Sword varies a bit between titles in the Legend of Zelda series, but it's generally the most powerful blade that Link can carry. It's a magical weapon that can be wielded only by a true hero, and, as its name implies, it's the weapon of choice in decisive battles. At the end of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link returned it to its stone pedestal.

Ganondorf's swords[edit]

SpaceWorld 2000 sword[edit]

The unnamed sword popularly known as the SpaceWorld 2000 sword was wielded by Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda-based SpaceWorld 2000 GameCube Tech Demo, being used in a short sword duel with Link. Despite the sword only appearing in a tech demo before, it appeared in Melee as part of one of Ganondorf's victory poses and returned in Ultimate as part of Ganondorf's down taunt and his new smash attacks. The sword did not appear in Brawl or SSB4, which used the Twilight Princess design of Ganondorf and the Sword of Six Sages from the same game.

Sword of the Six Sages[edit]

The Sword of the Six Sages is a longsword from The Legend of Zelda universe. In the backstory of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the sword was originally used by the Sages in an attempt to execute Ganondorf. While the sword penetrated his armor and left a glowing wound, Ganondorf was kept alive by the Triforce of Power he possessed, and he took the sword for himself before he was sealed into the Twilight Realm. When Ganondorf is revived towards the end of the game's plot, he uses the sword prominently in his final battle with Link. The sword is first given its official name in its appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a legacy item unlockable through the usage of Ganondorf's Smash amiibo.

In Smash, Ganondorf shows off the Sword of the Six Sages in his down taunt in both Brawl and SSB4. He would first use it to attack as part of the Warlock Blade custom move in SSB4. The sword did not appear in Melee or Ultimate, which use Ganondorf's Ocarina of Time design, and his sword from the SpaceWorld 2000 The Legend of Zelda tech demo.

Kokiri Sword[edit]

The Kokiri Sword is a short sword from The Legend of Zelda universe. It is Young Link's starting weapon in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, where it was retrieved from a treasure chest in Kokiri Forest on Link's way to see the Great Deku Tree at the beginning of the game. It also appears in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, slightly redesigned.

In Smash, Young Link wields the Ocarina of Time version of the sword.

Galaxia[edit]

Galaxia is a branched sword from the Kirby universe. It is Meta Knight's signature weapon and is used by him in all of his appearances. It was first named Galaxia in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime series and the name was adopted back into the main games starting with Kirby's Epic Yarn.

In Smash, Meta Knight wields Galaxia in all of his playable appearances. In Brawl and SSB4, it is also the namesake of his Final Smash, Galaxia Darkness. Kirby also uses Galaxia when he copies Meta Knight's Mach Tornado, despite not normally wielding it.

Greninja's water katana/kunai[edit]

Greninja uses a blade of water for its smash attacks and forward air. It was originally a water katana in Smash 4, but was changed to a kunai in Ultimate, which is similar to when Ash's Greninja uses Cut in Pokémon the Series.

Although an original concept in Smash, several Greninja in the film Pokémon Detective Pikachu would use water swords, similar to the Greninja in Smash 4 and Ultimate. It also has been referenced in Pokémon UNITE.

Falchion[edit]

Falchion is a broadsword from the Fire Emblem universe. A regalia sword dating back to the original Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Falchion is the signature weapon of the series' first protagonist, Marth. Falchion's sister weapon/artifact is the Fire Emblem, a.k.a. the Binding Shield; they were both created together by the Divine Dragon Naga from her fangs, to provide humanity with a means of protecting itself from sinister dragons. The weapons can be used separately or together. In the Smash Bros. series, three different Falchions appear, all under unique names.

Exalted Falchion[edit]

The original version of the sword that Marth wields was known merely as Falchion in its original appearances, but in Smash Bros. and some later appearances, it is referred to as Exalted Falchion (Chrom's Falchion is also known by this name when fully awakened with the power of the Fire Emblem). As of Marth's games, it has become an heirloom of the Altean royal family after its use by their founder, Anri, to defeat the Dragon King Medeus. In Smash Bros., it uses its design from Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem; this design is also used as the Fire Emblem series symbol. In all of Marth's Smash Bros. appearances, his Falchion has a stronger sweetspot at the tip of its blade. Kirby can also use the sword if he copies Marth's Shield Breaker.

Sealed Falchion[edit]

The sword reappears in Fire Emblem Awakening many centuries later, in the hands of the Ylissean royal family and featuring a very different design. In the years since, Falchion has become locked with Naga's Holy Blood, but its power has been reduced due to most of the Fire Emblem's gemstones being removed at the hands of the First Exalt (as well as general decay to its parts, having been reforged and repaired multiple times to take on its current appearance). In this state, the sword is referred to as Sealed Falchion. By the start of the game, Falchion has been inherited by Chrom, and he eventually collects the Fire Emblem's gemstones and performs the rite of Awakening to restore its full strength, powering it up into Exalted Falchion.

In the English version of Awakening, this form is simply called Falchion, which is reflected in the Palutena's Guidance conversation about Chrom. However, it is given the name Sealed Falchion in Fire Emblem Heroes, which more closely matches the Japanese name (封剣ファルシオン, Sealed Sword Falchion).

In Smash, Chrom uses the Sealed Falchion in all of his appearances: as a playable fighter in Ultimate, in his role as part of Robin's Pair Up Final Smash, and in his costume for Mii Swordfighters. For his playable role, unlike Roy, who he is a clone of, its power is completely even throughout the blade. Kirby can also use the Sealed Falchion if he copies Chrom's Flare Blade.

Binding Blade[edit]

The Binding Blade (previously localized as the Sword of Seals), is a regalia sword from the Fire Emblem universe. The titular sword of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, the Binding Blade was the second sword wielded by the legendary Hartmut of the Eight Generals, the founder of the militant nation of Bern in Elibe. It was used to seal away the Demon Dragon Idunn and end the Scouring, a war in which humans fought and exiled dragons to another dimension. Late in The Binding Blade, the weapon is awakened by the Fire Emblem and reacts to Roy, promoting him into a Great Lord.

In Smash, the Binding Blade is wielded by Roy in all of his playable appearances. In a similar vein to Marth's Falchion, Roy's Binding Blade has consistently featured a "reverse" sweet spot at the base of its blade in every appearance, which encourages him to fight close to his opponents. Ironically, the Binding Blade is a two ranged weapon in Fire Emblem, unlike in Smash. It is also capable of having flame properties on some of its attacks. Starting from SSB4 onward, Roy also wields it in reverse grip for certain attacks, namely his neutral attack, forward tilt, up tilt and up special. Kirby can also use the Binding Blade if he copies Roy's Flare Blade.

A Levin Sword is a magic sword from the Fire Emblem universe. Debuting in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Levin Swords are used to cast thunder magic, and have appeared in many games of the series with varying designs. In the Fire Emblem series, the Levin Sword can be used to attack from afar, but this is not present in SSB4. Additionally, the Levin Sword in SSB4 is considerably shorter compared to its appearance in Fire Emblem Awakening.

In Smash, Robin uses a Fire Emblem Awakening-style Levin Sword for smash attacks and smash attack-like aerial attacks. Following its original elemental traits, the Levin Sword deals electric damage. After a certain number of uses, Levin Swords will break, referencing the Fire Emblem durability system. A broken Levin Sword will be dropped and shatter after a few seconds, but Robin or any other fighter can pick it up and use it as a basic throwing item before it disappears. Once broken, the sword respawns after about 6 seconds. In Ultimate, using the Levin Sword will display its current durability above Robin's damage meter.

Bronze Sword[edit]

A Bronze Sword is a very basic, weak sword from the Fire Emblem universe. Introduced in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Bronze Swords are inexpensive, have a very low weapon rank requirement and high durability, but are often very inferior in Might (damage) compared to other weapons.

In Smash, Robin uses a Bronze Sword for any sword-based moves that do not use the Levin Sword. This includes their jab, tilts, dash attack, neutral aerial, and any aerials performed normally. Robin also uses a Bronze Sword for smash attacks if the Levin Sword is unavailable. Despite being breakable in Awakening, Bronze Swords are unbreakable in Smash. Like the Levin Sword in SSB4, the Bronze Sword is considerably shorter compared to its appearance in Fire Emblem Awakening.

Omega Yato[edit]

Yato is a regalia katana from the Fire Emblem universe. In Fire Emblem Fates, it is Corrin's signature weapon and is capable of transforming into many variations over the course of the game, some of which are dependent on the story path chosen.

In Smash, Yato is Corrin's main weapon, appearing in its ultimate form known as Omega Yato, the "Fire Emblem" of its continuity. This form is exclusively available in the third story path, Revelation, and in the DLC chapter Heirs of Fate 6: Lost in the Waves. Despite its chainsaw-like blade, it functions identically to a typical sword with the exception of Corrin's charge portion of their forward smash, where the small blades rotate along with the sword and deal multiple weak hits.

Sword of the Creator[edit]

The Sword of the Creator, also simply called the Creator Sword, is one of the Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Byleth's signature weapon, crafted from the heart and bones of the progenitor goddess Sothis and previously wielded by the bandit king Nemesis. It has the ability to extend and retract like a whip to attack opponents at range.

The sword used to only be used at its fullest potential by those who bear the Crest of Flames, the "Fire Emblem" of this continuity but by the time Byleth acquired the sword at the Holy Mausoleum, only they can wield it despite Edelgard also having the Crest of Flames. The Relics usually require the corresponding crest stone to be used without harm, yet Byleth seemingly wields it without one. It is later revealed that the sword was made from the remains of the progenitor god and that the crest stone is her heart which Rhea placed within Byleth.

In Smash, the sword is used for most of Byleth's ground attacks, as well as upward-inputted moves such as up smash, up air, and up special. The sword is sometimes used in its whip form while other times is used in its sword form.

Monado[edit]

The Monado is a mythical weapon from the Xenoblade Chronicles universe. It is an energy blade, with the red shell opening up to produce a long beam of blue light. The Monado begins Xenoblade Chronicles as the Homs' ultimate weapon against the invading Mechon—it cannot harm Homs, whereas it is the only known weapon that can damage the Mechon. However, it appears to have a mind of its own; initially, Dunban is the only one that can successfully control its power, and even then, it gradually causes him to lose the use of his right arm. When the Mechon later attacks Colony 9, Dunban can no longer use the Monado despite trying, and Shulk ends up taking it in his stead, finding that he can wield it with no ill effects. From there, Shulk uses the Monado as his only weapon. As his adventure progresses, he discovers that it hides additional battle arts and provides him with premonitions of the future that he must take action to avoid. Over the course of the adventure, the Monado evolves to grant Shulk additional strength when he most needs it. Ultimately, Shulk and his party discover the deep and complex connection between the Monado and the nature of the world.

In Smash, Shulk wields the initial form of the Monado as his primary weapon and additionally utilizes its Monado Arts. Due to its beam nature, the Monado grants Shulk excellent disjointed range, one of the longest in the entire series. Some of his attacks with the Monado are taken from his moves in Xenoblade Chronicles. Its ability to provide premonitions is also used as his down special, functioning as a counterattack. Kirby can also carry the Monado if he copies Monado Arts from Shulk, though he does not fight with it. Unlike Dunban and Reyn in their home game, although Kirby isn't a Homs member, he can carry the Monado with no trouble.

A stylized depiction of the Monado is also used as the Xenoblade series symbol, matching how it was stylized on the loading screens of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Aegis Sword[edit]

The Aegis Sword is a weapon type exclusive to Pyra and Mythra in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, being wielded by their Driver Rex (and by Mythra herself in Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country). Pyra's Aegis Sword is an energy blade with a red single-edged triangular shell similar in appearance to the Monado, but with several small beams emitted from its side. With it, Rex's attacks and Pyra's Blade Specials specialize in the Fire element. Mythra's Aegis Sword has a white double-edged triangular shell and its smaller beams form a crossguard. With it, Rex's attacks and Mythra's Blade Specials in XC2—along with Mythra's attacks, Vanguard/Rear Guard Arts, and Specials in Torna ~ The Golden Country—specialize in the Light element.

In Smash, Pyra and Mythra wield their respective Aegis Swords, rather than Rex, similarly to how Mythra does so in Torna ~ The Golden Country. Pyra's sword generates flame effects for certain attacks (and the slash effect for other attacks), but as Smash lacks a true "light" element, Mythra's sword instead merely uses the slash effect for all of its direct attacks, and the magic effect for its Light element-based moves. The energy blade of Pyra's sword has noticeably greater length than Mythra's during shared standard attacks, despite the two having identical length in their home game. During various animations in Smash, Pyra and Mythra's swords levitate freely near their bodies. Additionally, during Pyra and Mythra's respective Final Smashes (Burning Sword and Sacred Arrow), the sword gets handed over to Rex, who performs the initial slash that sets up into the rest of either move. Kirby can also use both swords if he copies Pyra's Flame Nova or Mythra's Lightning Buster, respectively. Pyra's Aegis Sword is also part of Rex's Mii Swordfighter costume. Pneuma's spirit also depicts her wielding her respective Aegis Sword.

Cloud's broadswords[edit]

Buster Sword[edit]

The Buster Sword is an immense broadsword from the Final Fantasy universe. Debuting in Final Fantasy VII, it is Cloud Strife's trademark and starting weapon, and was wielded before him by Angeal Hewley and Zack Fair. Angeal was the original owner of the Buster Sword and it was forged by his father when Angeal joined SOLDIER but after his father fell ill and passed, Angeal barely used it to avoid the blade being damaged, instead fighting with a standard SOLDIER sword because of his father's memory. Angeal would later entrust the Buster Sword to Zack as a symbol of passing on his honor and dreams. Zack uses the Buster Sword much more frequently than Angeal, but Zack would later be gunned down by Shinra outside of Midgar. Just prior to his death, Zack would pass on the Buster Sword to Cloud, naming him his living legacy and proof of his life.

After acquiring the Buster Sword, Cloud would use it as his main weapon but he would later get better weapons later in the game like the Hardedge and the Ultima Weapon for example. Cloud still uses the Buster Sword in cutscenes and minigames however. In Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Cloud would place the Buster Sword on the cliff where Zack had his last stand as a memorial. The sword rusts and becomes covered in dirt due to its exposure to the elements and lack of maintenance, but after Cloud defeats Sephiroth yet again, he soon after refurbishes the Buster Sword and moves it to the Sector 5 church as a memorial to both Zack and Aerith Gainsborough.

The Buster Sword has become an iconic design element for both Cloud and Final Fantasy VII in general, due to its massive size and simple, yet distinctive shape. The Buster Sword is wielded by Cloud in most of his appearances and has appeared in other Final Fantasy media as well. From tip to handle, it is approximately five to six feet long, with a single-edged large blade approximately one foot wide. There are two holes near the handguard, variably said to be Materia slots (and portrayed as such in Final Fantasy VII Remake), or where Cloud clips the sword onto his back. Kirby can also wield the Buster Sword if he copies Blade Beam from Cloud.

Fusion Sword[edit]

The Fusion Sword is a six-piece sword assembly wielded by Cloud Strife. Cloud uses the base sword and the others in its set as his preferred weapon in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the sequel film to Final Fantasy VII. It is composed of six swords that assemble into a single large sword with a shape identical to the Buster Sword.

In Smash, when Cloud uses his costume based on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the Buster Sword is replaced with the combined Fusion Sword to match, with no difference in function barring one exception: as of Ultimate update 10.1.0, it will split into its six component blades for his unique Final Smash in that costume, Omnislash Ver. 5. This is primarily a cosmetic change, with the resulting total damage and knockback being the same as the normal version. Kirby cannot copy the Fusion Sword, regardless of Cloud's costume.

Masamune[edit]

The Masamune is a longsword belonging to the antagonist of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth. A variant of the series' recurring Masamune blade, its most notable aspect is its extreme length. The blade is taller than Sephiroth himself, clocking in somewhere between six and eight feet long. Sephiroth is said to be the only one able to effectively wield it; Tifa Lockhart briefly, but unsuccessfully, attempted to use it against Sephiroth during the Nibelheim Incident. Sephiroth gained the ability to manifest the blade at will after his merging with the Lifestream.

In Smash, Sephiroth uses the Masamune as his primary means of attacking. In comparison to its original appearance, the blade's length appears to have been slightly shortened for the purpose of gameplay balance. Despite this, it is still among the longest-reaching weapons in the game, as well as the longest sword in the entire series (if not counting those exclusively wielded in Final Smashes or by boss characters, such as Kirby's Ultra Sword or Ganon's greatswords).

Hero's swords[edit]

Supreme Sword of Light[edit]

The Sword of Light is a very powerful sword that appears in Dragon Quest XI. The sword is forged by Luminary and is a replica of the Super Sword of Light. The Supreme Sword of Light is an upgraded version of the Sword of Light that is forged in Act 3 in order to defeat the true final boss.

In Smash, Luminary uses the sword as his primary weapon. Kirby can wield the Supreme Sword of Light if Hero's Frizz is copied, though he does not fight with it.

Erdrick's Sword[edit]

Erdrick's Sword, also known as the Sword of Kings, is a very powerful sword that appears in titles across Dragon Quest series. The sword debuted in the original Dragon Quest and has reappeared in several titles since. After its use by the legendary hero Erdrick in Dragon Quest III, it received equally legendary status. The sword has since been wielded by multiple heroes across the series.

In Smash, Erdrick uses the sword as his primary weapon. Mii Swordfighters can also use it if using the Erdrick Equipment.

Zenithian Sword[edit]

The Zenithian Sword is a sword that appears in a few Dragon Quest titles, first appearing Dragon Quest IV. It is used by Solo and Sofia as one of their numerous weapons throughout the game, first retrieved at the World Tree. It later appears in Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest Swords, and appears in Dragon Quest VI under the name "Sword of Ramias".

In Smash, Solo uses the sword as his primary weapon.

Dragovian King Sword[edit]

The Dragovian King Sword is a sword that appears in Dragon Quest VIII, being only wieldable by the Hero and is the most powerful weapon he can obtain in said game.

In Smash, Eight uses the sword as his primary weapon.

Steve's swords[edit]

The sword is a melee weapon from Minecraft. There are multiple variants of swords, including wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond, and netherite (which is not present in Ultimate), all varying in strength and durability. They are crafted with a single stick and two units of either wooden planks, cobblestone, iron ingots, gold ingots or diamonds respectively, with netherite swords requiring a diamond sword to be upgraded with a netherite ingot by using a smithing table. Swords can also be obtained by defeating specific mobs, trading with villagers, and from naturally spawning chests.

In Smash, Steve uses swords in his jab, forward tilt, neutral aerial, forward smash, edge attack, and floor attack. He is initially armed with a wooden sword, but he is able to Craft new swords using a Crafting Table. After a while of use, swords will break.

Mii Swordfighters can also wield the diamond sword by using the Diamond Armor costume.

Kingdom Key[edit]

Keyblades are the primary weapon of choice in the Kingdom Hearts universe. They functionally serve three purposes: as a key to unlock virtually any keyhole, as a sword for close quarters combat, and as a wand to cast magic spells. In Super Smash Bros., Sora wields his signature Kingdom Key; it has a yellow guard, a metal colored shaft in the shape of a key, and is adorned with a keychain in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head.

In the Kingdom Hearts series, the first Keyblades were originally created by the Master of Masters by extracting them from the hearts of people using the χ-blade (pronounced the same as Keyblade), a legendary Keyblade meant to unlock the true Kingdom Hearts. However, various factions grew surrounding the myths of the χ-blade and Kingdom Hearts, resulting in the first Keyblade War, and the aftermath left resulted in the Keyblade Graveyard as it is known in legends. A multitude of Keyblades exist with different attributes, strengths and weaknesses. A single wielder is capable of using multiple Keyblades, with particularly powerful wielders being able to wield several simultaneously.

A process known as bequeathing allows Keyblade Wielders to hand their Keyblade to others as a test of worthiness for that particular individual. The Kingdom Key was originally Riku's main Keyblade, but in the process of Riku falling into the darkness, the Kingdom Key chose Sora as its new user.

When Kirby copies Sora's Magic, he does not directly wield the Keyblade and instead wields a rough imitation of the weapon made of sparkles, presumably due to the complicated requirements to properly become a Keyblade wielder.

  • The Ultra Sword, used by Kirby in his Final Smash.
  • Kirby's Final Cutter.
  • Kirby can copy fighters via Inhale, so he can use some fighters' swords through their Copy Ability. He cannot copy alternate costumes, so some non-default swords are unusable, like the Fusion Sword. Other Copy Abilities gain an unusable sword for aesthetic purposes, such as Hero's Supreme Sword of Light. In Shulk’s case, Kirby does use the weapon, but not by directly attacking with it. With Sora, Kirby copies the move, but not the weapon and instead wields a rough imitation of it made of sparkles.
  • Flame Sword, Sword Man's weapon from Mega Man 8, which is used in Mega Man's forward aerial.
  • The non-playable Dragon Quest Heroes' swords (aside from the Hero of Dragon Quest V, whose default weapon is a staff) in Hero’s Final Smash Gigaslash.

  • Although Exalted Falchion does not have the appearance of a real-life falchion, its tipper mechanic is similar to cleaver falchions, which are blade-heavy and thus strongest at the tip.
  • Close examination of textures for the Binding Blade in Melee shows that the text "©HAL LABRATORY.INC"[sic], a misspelled version of HAL Laboratory Inc, is included in the file. It is not known why the signature is there.
  • The Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, and Xenoblade series are the only universes with multiple characters to have all of its characters use swords.
  • The Sablé Prince's sword is fully modeled and textured in SSB4 despite never being removed from his sheath and thus not normally visible to the player. Looking at the design of the sword in the game's data reveals that it accurately matches the design seen in concept art for Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru.
