MegaMan Volnutt (ロック・ヴォルナット, Rock Volnutt) is the protagonist of the Mega Man Legends sub-series of the Mega Man universe.
Origin[edit]
Volnutt was originally named Mega Man Trigger and was a system unit, specifically a purifier unit (Maverick Hunter in Japan), a hyper advanced android with biological and mechanical components. Trigger lived in Elysium (Heaven in Japan), a space colony set up by the immortal pure humans to live on until the Earth was found to be inhabitable again, Elysium was run by the AI known as the Master System. Trigger's job was to eliminate Aberrant units (Mavericks in Japan) that disobeyed or threatened the Master System. Trigger was close to the Master, the last pure human left on Elysium. The pure humans had created a human subspecies known as Carbons as a slave race to test the Earth's safety.
The Master asked Trigger to travel to Terra to see the Carbons with him and landed on Calbania Island. Seeing how the Carbons had developed sapience and their own society like the humans of the past, the Master and Trigger decided against wiping out the carbons to revive pure humanity. The Master orders Trigger to destroy the Master System AI and delete all the data in Elysium because Elysium's cold and sterile envirnoment had stifled pure humanity and resulted in them dying out, whilst the carbon's regular lives had resulted in them growing as a society and becoming humanity's true successor.
Trigger went to grant the Master's dying wish, but Sera (mother unit of Elysium) fought him after being frustrated with Yuna (mother unit of Terra)'s decision to be neutral. Trigger was heavily damaged and his parameters were set to reformat, transforming into a baby without any memories. Trigger then put his essential data files in Data. Yuna sealed Trigger and Data in a ruin in Nino Island while Sera was with Geetz in Forbidden Island.
Years later, Barrell Caskett was researching the ruins in Nino Island and found Trigger and Data. Since he broke into the ruins without the Grandmaster's permission, he took them under his care. Barrell's granddaughter, Roll named Mega Man Volnutt (Barrell named him Rock as a pun on Rock and Roll in Japan) after one of her favorite video game characters, which was canonically based on the figure of the same name that existed several millennia prior. Volnutt lived the life of a Digger, searching for Refractors and defeating Reaverbots. Barrell would also fashion Volnutt a Mega Buster, which is the very same buster wielded by Mega Man X modified by Barrell to be compatible with multiple other weapons. In the events of Mega Man Legends, Volnutt had to protect Kattlelox Island from the Bonnes (after a crash landing), with the daughter (Tron Bonne) gaining a crush on him. He also finds Mega Man Juno who knows his past as Mega Man Trigger. Juno plans to destroy Kattlelox and Volnutt defeats him. Data reveals he knows his past but can't reveal it.
In the mobile spinoff title Rockman DASH: 5tsu no Shima no Daibouken!, Volnutt and Roll travel to an island that Barrell is investigating. While on the island, Volnutt goes on a digout to find a new deflector for their airship Flutter when he enters ancient ruins. Volnutt finds a deflector, but it is stolen by the Bonne family as payback for the events on Kattleox island and they flee to a nearby town. Volnutt liberates the town and takes the deflector back to Flutter for repairs. However, the ship then crashlands on Pauran island, where the Caskett family again fight off the Bonne family trying to locate the rumored treasure on the island. They next travel to Ilux island to investigate some kind of catastrophe, which put the local police on high alert. Volnutt is even mistaken for a criminal trying to attack Barrell, who give high-speed chase. Volnutt is eventually able to elude the police and tries to find Barrell to clear this misunderstanding. This leads him to Urakoi island, which has a volcano that is rumored to erupt soon and ruin the environment by blocking out the sun with its ash. Searching the local ruins to prevent this eruption, Volnutt finds a machine the energy from magma to create Refractors. On their way home, the Caskett family finds a giant tower with three smaller towers around it. Though the inside of the tower is heavily guarded with traps and Reaverbots, they find a transport to Elysium, albeit in a non-functional state.
In Mega Man Legends 2, Barrell and Verner Von Bluecher travel to Forbidden Island. Volnutt and Roll go to Forbidden Island to find out who "Matilda" (who helped attack Barrell's ship) is and if she is Roll's mother. Volnutt accidentally frees Sera and Geetz trying to prevent the Sulphur-Bottom (Barrell's ship) from crashing. Geetz needs 4 keys to open the Mother Lode (which is why Barrell and Bluecher were there) and Bluecher sends Volnutt to do it. After getting the keys, Sera and Geetz turn on Volnutt. Geetz fights Volnutt while Sera goes to Elysium. Geetz explodes and Volnutt is hurt. Yuna and Data manage to heal him and he regains part of his memories as Trigger. He goes to Elysium to stop Sera from using the Carbon Reinitialization Program. Volnutt, Yuna, and Sera are trapped on Elysium while the Elder System begins to reactivate. Back on Terra, Roll and Tron Bonne begin to build a rocket to get Volnutt. It is assumed that Mega Man Legends 3 would have continued these storylines before being canceled and the Legends sub-series going on indefinite hiatus.
