The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (ゼルダの伝説 トワイライトプリンセス, Zeruda no Densetsu Towairaito Purinsesu) is the thirteenth game in Nintendo's critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda video game series. It is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Wii and Nintendo GameCube video game consoles.

Originally planned for release in November 2005, it was delayed by Nintendo so that the EAD staff could add more content and refine the game. The Wii version was released on the dates of the Wii launch, in November and December of 2006. This makes Twilight Princess the first Zelda game to debut at the launch of a Nintendo console. The GameCube version was released in December 2006, making this game the last title to be released for the GameCube. Twilight Princess was called "The Wind Waker 2" during its early internal development, but was changed to Twilight Princess as development progressed. The Wii and GameCube versions are identical except that they are mirror images of each other.

Twilight Princess is the first game in The Legend of Zelda series to be rated T by the ESRB, for fantasy violence and animated blood. The game's story focuses on Link as he tries to prevent the Twilight Realm from engulfing Hyrule as both a human and a wolf with the help of a mysterious creature named Midna. It takes place many years after Majora's Mask, on the timeline created after the events of Ocarina of Time. The Wii version is also the first game in which Link is right-handed, which was to make swinging the Wii remote to make Link move his sword more realistic.

The game received high praise from critics, earning perfect scores from many major gaming publications, with many reviewers hailing it as the greatest Zelda game ever made, and one reviewer even described Twilight Princess as "the single greatest videogame experience". It won many "Game of the Year" awards for 2006, and IGN gave it the awards for Best Artistic Design, Best Original Score, Best Use of Sound, Best Graphics and Best Story. Nintendo Official Magazine placed Twilight Princess at number 16 in their list of the 100 Greatest Nintendo Games of All Time. On the other hand, some have criticized the game for often being blurry, which is due to the fact that the Wii is the only seventh generation console not to support HD graphics, and others have said that, while the idea of swinging the Wii remote to make Link swing his sword is a good one, the controls simply aren't immersive enough. This issue is one which Nintendo are seeking to resolve in the next 3D Zelda game, which, it has been announced, will make use of the Wii Motion Plus to translate every single movement of the Wii remote into a movement of Link's sword.

In the Super Smash Bros. series

Characters

Zelda's Brawl look is based on her Twilight Princess appearance; the same applies to Link's look. Also, Link's weapons have been updated to their Twilight Princess incarnations, such as his Gale Boomerang and his Clawshot. His old Bow has been replaced by the Hero's Bow, and the speed and range of its arrows has been noticeably increased.

Ganondorf also receives his Twilight Princess look in Brawl as well. However, his moveset remains largely unaltered from Melee, albeit with new, improved animations - arguably the most significant change to his moveset is his new Side Special move, Flame Choke, which originates from this game. The fact that Ganondorf's moveset remains generally the same greatly contradicts his Twilight Princess appearance, as he fought almost exclusively with a sword in that game, with only the occasional elbow jab or swift kick (said kick is in fact Ganondorf's new Side tilt in Brawl). He, does, however, show off the sword with which he fights in Twilight Princess in his Down taunt. Masahiro Sakurai made mention of the criticism that Ganondorf receives from fans over the disuse of the blade on the DOJO!!.

Stages

The Bridge of Eldin stage is both from Twilight Princess and is the first stage in the Super Smash Bros. series to be pulled directly from a game. King Bulbin appears after some time, sometimes followed by a Bulblin, and he can destroy the middle section of the bridge. The warp portal that brings the bridge piece back is also derived from Twilight Princess.

Music

Music from Twilight Princess appears on the Bridge Of Eldin stage. These tracks are:

  • Main Theme (Twilight Princess);
  • The Hidden Village;
  • Midna's Lament.

Items

In Brawl, the Heart Container item has been updated to match their appearance in Twilight Princess, and the design of Deku Nuts, one of the items introduced in Brawl, is also taken from the game.
