The Walt Disney Company (often shortened to simply Disney) is an American multinational entertainment and media conglomerate headquartered at the Walt Disney Studios complex in Burbank, California. Mickey Mouse, a cartoon character created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, serves as the official mascot of the company.
Disney was originally founded on October 16, 1923, by brothers Walt and Roy O. Disney as the "Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio"; it also operated under the names "The Walt Disney Studio" and "Walt Disney Productions" before officially changing its name to The Walt Disney Company in 1986. The company established itself as a leader in the American animation industry with animation like Steamboat Willie in 1928, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, The Little Mermaid in 1989, Toy Story (through Pixar) in 1995, and Frozen in 2013; as well as a major contender in live action family entertainment with films such as the Herbie and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. Disney has since diversified into television, theme parks, consumer products, non-family entertainment through the Touchstone Pictures label, and many other ventures, as well as expanding these ventures through various acquisitions, including The Muppets (from The Jim Henson Company), Pixar, Marvel Entertainment, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox), giving it access to franchises such as The Avengers, Star Wars, and The Simpsons.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mickey Mouse and Mickey and Donald, both Game & Watch games based on the eponymous Disney characters, are listed in the Chronicle in all regions. Three additional games are also included exclusively in the Japanese version, those being the Nintendo 64 version of Mickey's Speedway USA, Disney's Magical Quest Starring Mickey and Minnie, and Disney's Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Sora, the protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, developed by Square Enix as a joint collaboration between them and Disney, was confirmed on October 5, 2021 to be the sixth and final fighter in the Fighter's Pass Vol. 2, and the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter in general. Sora, along with Hollow Bastion, 10 music tracks and 13 total spirits released for purchase on October 18th, 2021 (October 19th in some time zones). Despite Disney neither developing nor publishing the Kingdom Hearts games, they are the sole owner of the brand and all of its original assets, leading to them being the company credited with Sora's inclusion.
The silhouette of Mickey Mouse's head, one of Disney’s most recognizable symbols and trademarks, can also be seen as a keychain on Sora's Keyblade.
Trivia
- Disney is the second oldest company represented in Smash, with only Nintendo debuting first by 34 years.
- Disney has previously collaborated with Nintendo on multiple occasions, having done so as early as the 1960s with several products such as playing cards and board games.
- Disney is the second major Western third-party company to be introduced to the Super Smash Bros. series, after Microsoft.
- Disney is the fifth third-party company to be introduced to the Super Smash Bros. series as DLC, the first four being Square Enix, Atlus, Microsoft, and SNK.
- Coincidentally, Sora was revealed in the same month Disney was founded, with his release only falling 2 days after Disney's 98th anniversary.
- Disney is the only third-party company to have a playable character, but no Mii Costumes.
- Disney is currently the only company represented in Smash that is not primarily a software or hardware producer.
- Disney is currently tied with SNK for the least amount of playable characters in Smash out of all third-party companies with a playable character, with only one: Square Enix, Sega, Konami, and Capcom have three each while Bandai Namco and Microsoft have two each.
- While Disney is an American company, only the Japanese branch (The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd.) is actually credited in Ultimate, including several employees.
