Funky Copter (スピニングコング, Funking Helicopter) is Donkey Kong's up special move.

Description

Donkey Kong gets into Funky's Airplane and flies forward before taking a sharp turn upwards. After that, Funky kicks Donkey Kong out of the airplane and leaves him in a helpless state. The blades of the plane do multiple hits of heavy damage to whoever gets caught in them and KO near upper blast lines easily, while the rest of the plane does minimal damage but heavy knockback if anyone hits them.

It has both good vertical and horizontal recovery, so it's the best move in the game. Competitive play for Donkey Kong relies solely on who uses this amazing move first.

Instructional quotes

Super Smash Bros. Melee instruction booklet Donkey Kong (SSBM) While it doesn't gain much altitude, this move covers a lot of horizontal ground, making it an effective recovery move.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl instruction booklet Donkey Kong (SSBB) Poor vertical gain but great for horizontal recovery.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS case foldout Donkey Kong (SSB4) Take an airplane ride for a combo attack. Can move left or right.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Move List Donkey Kong (SSBU) Hit people with an airplane. This is totally legal.

Origin

In the cartoon, Donkey Kong flew in Funky's airplane multiple times. Funky is not a very good pilot, so people got hurt a lot. In his only action that displays Donkey Kong may have an IQ that's above room temperature, he weaponizes this in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Trivia

  • In SSB4, the animation for the plane's blades has less spins in the 3DS version than the Wii U version.
