EarthBound is a sequel to the original Mother, a Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System title released only in Japan. Mother and EarthBound are not directly connected. One of the only connections plotwise between the two is Giygas, the primary antagonist in both games, who was also significantly changed between the first and second games.
In Super Smash Bros.
Ness, Earthbound's main character, is unlockable in the game.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
Ness returns as a starter character in Melee. Also, Mr. Saturn becomes an item. In addition, Onett and Fourside become stages. Ness has three character trophies. Mr. Saturn, UFO, Starman, Jeff, Poo, and Paula are also trophies.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Earthbound is one of the Masterpieces, but it is only available in Japanese version of the game. Ness returns as an unlockable character, and Lucas joins the roster. Onett returns as a Melee Stage and New Pork City is a new stage. Jeff also becomes an Assist Trophy. Mr. Saturn returns as an item and the Franklin Badge also becomes an item. Porky is a boss in the Subspace Emissary, and the Porky Statue is also present as an obstacle in the stage. EarthBound trophies include: Ness, Lucas, PK Starstorm (Ness), PK Starstorm (Lucas), Jeff, Porky, Porky Statue, Mr. Saturn, and Franklin Badge. A number of EarthBound stickers and music are also included.
