A challenge in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a goal that must be met, usually requiring the player to use a certain character, input certain moves, play against a specific level AI, etc. Below is a list of all 124 challenges. Completion of a goal may net the player gold, Spirit Points, spirits, or a costume/hat accessory. Each challenge comes with a picture as well, normally having something to do with said challenge.

A Golden Hammer can be used on challenges to complete them. Golden Hammers are unlocked after a certain amount of challenges have been completed. Certain challenges cannot be completed with a Golden Hammer; these are marked as red cells. All other (white) cells can be broken by a Golden Hammer.

Challenges are sorted by the gameplay category where their conditions must be met. Due to this, it has been split into multiple sections below.

Red indicates that a Golden Hammer may not be used

Trivia

  • Unlike in past games, when a Golden Hammer is used to clear a challenge and then finish that challenge later, the hammer icon next to that challenge's description will be removed.
  • Like in Smash 4 some challenge pictures feature images that normally are impossible to mimic in the actual game.
  • Some of the challenge pictures are references events or situations to various games:
    • The picture of Cloud and Zelda in Tortimer Island references Aerith's death from Final Fantasy VII, specifically the scene where Cloud lays Aerith's body to rest in the waters of the Forgotten City. Coincidentally, the reason behind her death, Sephiroth, was added into Ultimate two years later.
    • The picture showing Ken and Yoshi with his back turned is a reference to the recurring Street Fighter character Akuma and his signature attack, the Shun Goku Satsu.
    • The picture of Snake, Bayonetta and Zero Suit Samus in Gerudo Valley is a possible reference to the fight against Sniper Wolf in Metal Gear Solid, specifically to her death following the battle.
    • The picture of Mega Man and Dr. Wily in Wily Castle references a running gag at the end of every classic Mega Man game, where Dr. Wily would beg for mercy after being defeated. Mega Man attempting to shoot a Crash Bomber at Wily may specifically reference the ending of Mega Man 7, where Mega Man attempted to kill Wily.
  • Toon Link's Spirit Board image references the Swiss folktale of William Tell, an archer who was forced to shoot an apple off his son's head.
