GlitchGate Controversy
A week before the tournament started, PGStats determined that Glitch 7 would be a S-Tier tournament due to the number of currently-ranked PGRU players attending the tournament. However, Stroder would disqualify himself from the tournament, directly affecting Glitch 7's score and dropping it below the S-Tier threshold of 2,400 points. As a result, PGStats announced that Glitch 7 would be demoted into an A-Tier.[1] This decision, which some have dubbed as "GlitchGate," caused some controversy, with people pointing out how MomoCon 2019 kept it's S-Tier status even after having over 50 disqualifications, which would have also lowered it into an A-Tier.[2] Others believed that demoting it to the A-tier would greatly affect potential candidates for the list such as Gen and Jakal, who both had incredible runs at the tournament.
In response to the controversy, PracticalTAS explained that counting disqualifications for normal entrants was extremely difficult and potentially inaccurate due to how many are listed as 0-2 instead.[3] Furthermore, suar linked and agreed to a post where another player stated that tier values were simply a title, and that how much the tournament weighted was more important. Trivia
- ESAM's victory in Ultimate singles at Glitch 7 notably coincided with Ash Ketchum's victory at the Manalo Conference in the Pokémon anime. Both are known for using Pikachu.
- Additionally, ESAM's victory in Ultimate singles at Glitch 7 is the first major tournament win of his career. 2019 also featured the first major win of Melee's best Pikachu main, Axe, at Smash Summit 8.
