Pillaring

Pillaring is a technique of constantly barraging the opponent's shield, used by Fox and Falco. This technique is commonly used in high-level play.

How to Pillar

Against an opponent's shield, switch off between a Down-Air, L-cancelled into a shine, and then repeat by SHFFLing another Down Air. This can be mixed up with multishines and waveshines. The term "pillaring" is sometimes applied to Falco's shine to Down Air combo on an unshielded opponent, though such a technique may require full or even double jumps depending on the opponent's damage and, thus, this usage is usually not considered correct.

Pillaring's Uses

Pillaring can pressure an opponent in a shield, forcing them to roll out of it, which can be chased. It is possible to be shield-grabbed, but it requires very good timing.

Technicalites

Pillaring can be shield grabbed or broken out of by Samus' Up-B, Bowser's Up-B, Fox doing either shine or Neutral Air, and a few other moves.

Strategies

SHFFLing attacks against a shield leading into a pillar can put pressure on an opponent, and force them to make a mistake.
