The Whispy blink glitch is a glitch performed in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The Whispy blink glitch is a glitch in Super Smash Bros. Melee, first discovered by Magnus420 on SmashBoards.
How to perform
The player must choose Marth or Roy in any type of Vs. match or training and choose Dream Land (64) as the stage. Then, wait until Whispy, the tree in the back of the stage, blinks. On the last 2 frames of Whispy blinking, the player must execute a jab, Forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, or standing grab.

The glitch only works on version 1.0.
Math or Roy will swing their sword in a unusual way. The hitboxes for these attacks (sans standing grab) will disappear until the move finishes.

How to perform
As for the standing grab, Marth/Roy does the grab without lunging forward, making it safer than a normal grab.
As Marth or Roy on Dream Land, the player must wait for Whispy Woods to blink twice. Right before Whispy's eyes are closed for the first blink, they must execute a jab, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, or standing grab.

Explanation
No one knows why the hitbox dissappears when Whispy blinks.

If done correctly, Marth or Roy will swing their sword in an unusual way. The attack will last as long as it normally would and the corresponding hitbox will still be attached to their arms and swords for a brief moment (except for the standing grab's hitbox which acts independent of Marth's or Roy's arm movement).
One explanation provided by a user on twitter stated that when he was using a mod that shows textures, when Whispy blinked, he saw blink textures of Marth. He said when Marth blinks and Whispy does the blink at the same time, the game cannot execute the hitbox as the textures is very close to the blink. However, this theory was debunked when a youtuber called AsumSans asked why can't Marth and Roy do it to each other. The user said he would check again. This time, he did not see any texture of Marth/Roy blinking when whispy blinks.

Explanation
The reason behind this glitch is still unknown.
An old explanation provided by Evsen on reddit on September 2016 stated that when he was using Dolphin emulator's texture dumping feature and claimed that Marth's face was dumped on Whispy Woods. He assumed that Marth and Roy's blinking animation is tied to Whispy's, and the animation glitches because the game may have been trying to use both blinking textures at the same time. Though accepted for years, AsumSaus debunked it in 2020, who analyzed Evsen's footage and could not recreate the finding, making AsumSaus believe that Evsen might have misremembered exactly what happened.
