They're KNOWN as the (blah) Pokemon, and it is true that in their games this is known as the species, but their SPECIES (what kind of creature they are) is (Mewtwo, Pikachu, etc). When it comes to species of Pokémon, the species of them are usually their own. Things such as "The Mouse Pokémon" for Pikachu are only just titles for the Pokémon and they don't necessarily mean that what kind of species they are are said on the titles.
