Name change[edit]

Hi, I suggest requesting Toomai for a name change, as your current username is near identical to an existing user. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 15:11, 9 September 2013 (EDT)

Hey, don't ignore this. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 10:34, 10 September 2013 (EDT)

While I think your username isn't that big of an issue (we did have Airconny and AirCon before, we have two Starmans, etc.), it is a big issue when you remove comments from talk pages, which is prohibited. FluffyDP 19:15, 10 September 2013 (EDT)
Airconny was requested though to change his name to Conny to avoid the name conflict and it was seen as an issue (when their names were merely similar and not nearly identical as is the case here). And the other Starman was never active on the Wiki to merit requesting him to change his name. So the existence of them does not make this user's name fine. Conny was not "requested to change his name"; he changed it because he wanted to; stop making shit up. I don't see what the big deal is, so they have similar names. Does it matter? No. Not only is this completely arbitrary and pointless, it goes against any precedent for any other website ever, all of which allow user names that are similar to each other. There isn't any attempt at impersonation here, so no policy is being broken and I don't see the issue. FluffyDP 22:42, 10 September 2013 (EDT)
"Conny was not "requested to change his name"; he changed it because he wanted to; stop making shit up."
On IRC, yes Conny was. PoD specifically suggested to him that he do that. Stop fucking accusing me of "making shit up".
"I don't see what the big deal is, so they have similar names. Does it matter? No."
Yes it does, it creates unnecessary confusion and can easily cause users to mistake one for the other, as well as makes it needlessly difficult to refer to them individually.
Just because Smashball isn't a big user on here doesn't mean we don't have to care about user confusion with him. We wouldn't accept a user going with a username "Toomaitoom", "The Omega Tyrant", "Doctor Pain", etc., regardless of if they were attempting to impersonate or were legitimate naive new users not aware of the existing userbase.
Also, "Thesmashball"'s name here isn't merely "similar", it's nearly identical, with the only technical difference being the existing user having some random numbers after his name, and this user having "The" before their name. Their usernames are essentially the same, and I actually confused "Thesmashball" for the other SmashBall at first; such confusion shouldn't be happening at all. On signatures we mandate user's names in their signature is immediately identifiable as them; the same applies to usernames being individual enough that the user is never mistaken as someone else.
"Not only is this completely arbitrary and pointless"
Do you know what the word arbitrary means? And something to keep each user individually identifiable by their name isn't "pointless".
"it goes against any precedent for any other website ever, all of which allow user names that are similar to each other."
One, there is "precedent" in Conny, the only reason this was never a problem before was when a user took a name very similar/near identical to an existing username, the user did pretty much nothing and went inactive immediately (such as the aforementioned Starman31 and SmashMaster), thus they were quickly forgotten and wouldn't answer to a name change request anyway. If such users were active for an extended period and did stuff, like both Smashballs do here, they would of been forced to change their name.
Two, we're not like every other website. We're not a large site with a tremendous amount of users, that makes it difficult to come up with unique names. We're also a Wiki, a type of site where everyone has to collaborate and work together, which makes it necessary for users to be quickly identifiable and easy to refer to by their name. We're not a site like AiB where everyone just does their own thing and thus your username doesn't matter.
"There isn't any attempt at impersonation here, so no policy is being broken and I don't see the issue."
Of course you won't "see the issue", you have to be incredibly pedantic each time when you perceive user rights being violated and ignore the very obvious problems. It not being policy at the moment does not mean it's not a problem and can't be enforced; policies are always being adapted and rewritten to apply to new problems. And as pointed out before, the reason this isn't "official policy" is because it rarely pop ups and it's even rarer for the second user to not fade away immediately. But just because it's rare doesn't mean it's not a problem when it does occur. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:19, 11 September 2013 (EDT)
OT is right, of course similar names should be avoided, if there was someone called ThePenguinofDeath you'd flip out so why is this any different, why are you being difficult DP? PenguinofDeath 02:24, 11 September 2013 (EDT)

SW:NAME[edit]

Hi, per our username policy, you must change your username, as it's essentially identical to SmashBall104. Contact Toomai, and report to him what you want your new username to be.

You got 48 hours to come up with a new username and report it. Keep in mind we will not hold this username snafu against you in the future if you comply with this. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 05:11, 15 September 2013 (EDT)

Thanks for your cooperation. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 20:08, 15 September 2013 (EDT)
