That Japanese wiki
I'm curious about that Japanese wiki you've been using as a source for names. What's its deal? How big is it userbase-wise? Why does it share our URL? Are we a major source of info for it, or the only source? How long has it been around? What's its source for move names? Does it have equivalents for other games? Toomai Glittershine The Golden 09:43, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
:Yes, it does seem a bit weird that is has the same URL has us  <font color="red">Poultry</font>(<font color="blue">talk</font>) the God-Slayer 09:52, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
::You know what, I guess you want me to stop using it for basic move names so I better stop right away before shit goes down then I guess. :P Just as a side note though, it seems coincidental in that most of those names seem to match the VERY OLD names used for standard attacks in that one IGN guide for Melee (and by proxy the strategy guide for Melee as well; e.g. Marth's forward smash being called "Dragon Killer"). --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 17:00, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
:::Update, http://www13.atwiki.jp/sumaburax/pages/206.html and http://www.wikihouse.com/suma/index.php?%A5%DE%A5%EB%A5%B9(DX) --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 17:11, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
:::I typed in "Marth Dragon Killer" in katakana copy-and-pasted from that Smash 4 wiki, and respectively are wikis for the Japanese version of Brawl (X) and Melee (DX/Deluxe). The names are arguably the same though I might need to find other sources to prove this. Marth's Justice Sword and Roy's Flame Sword are examples of standard attacks that have the same unique name in English though. --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 17:11, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
::::Here are the general guides on the latter wiki for the first three games respectively: http://www.wikihouse.com/suma/index.php?%A5%AD%A5%E3%A5%E9%A5%AF%A5%BF%A1%BC%B0%EC%CD%F7%2864%29, http://www.wikihouse.com/suma/index.php?%A5%AD%A5%E3%A5%E9%A5%AF%A5%BF%A1%BC%B0%EC%CD%F7%28DX%29 and http://www.wikihouse.com/suma/index.php?%A5%AD%A5%E3%A5%E9%A5%AF%A5%BF%A1%BC%B0%EC%CD%F7%28X%29 (64, Melee and Brawl). So it would seem most of the prior "unofficial names" are mainly from the Japanese versions, since most Japanese wikis for techniques show their original names a lot more clearly than other sources (even for most normal attacks in other more-traditional fighting games). --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 17:11, 25 July 2016 (EDT)
::Unlike Miles, I think we should indeed use names for normal attacks whenever the smallest source is available (e.g. the players' guides) (he's the only one who has ever argued the opposite to my memory). But that said it would still be nice to trace things back to a source somewhere that's not a wiki. I know the SSB64 website has names, and the SSBM one does for G&W, but I don't remember seeing anything else myself. == Dragon Fang ==
Why are you so adamant about including a note about the translation of "竜穿" as "Dragon Fang"? We don't particularly need to note every instance of Smash being consistent with translations in the source games. <font color="dodgerblue"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Miles <font color="silver">(<font color="silver">talk)</font></font></span></font> 23:13, 3 August 2016 (EDT)
::Meh, I'm just a dumbass who's adamant about literal translations anyway, since arguably Japanese isn't as heavily contextual as Chinese. Is it even actually translated as Dragon Fang in Japanese via the original games, or is it a traditional hold-over on Fire Emblem Wiki? --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 23:16, 3 August 2016 (EDT)
:::I'm not sure I understand the way you worded your question exactly, but to my knowledge the English translation of 竜穿 in everything Fates and SSB4 related is Dragon Fang, 100% consistently. And in terms of how "literal" it is, it seems to be a play on the part of 穿 that's 牙. But the point is mostly that SSB4 maintaining that localization doesn't really require us to go out of our way to point it out. <font color="dodgerblue"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Miles <font color="silver">(<font color="silver">talk)</font></font></span></font> 23:29, 3 August 2016 (EDT)
::::Well, there's a similar concept with Monado Arts. Most of that stuff had translation notes courtesy of me too. --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 23:42, 3 August 2016 (EDT)
:::::Okay, nevermind. You're right. But I still think that it has to be pointed out because 穿 =/= 牙. It would make a bit more sense if it was some sort of "Shōnen Jump Alternate Character Reading Random English Over Kanji" translation, but whatever. --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 00:07, 4 August 2016 (EDT)
::::::And I meant to say "did the Japanese developers actually want to translate it like that", or "is it because the bigger Fire Emblem wiki also translated it as Dragon Fang and that you wanted to borrow from them?" --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 00:34, 4 August 2016 (EDT)
Hi
Please see SW:TRIVIA. A lot of your edits seem to stray outside of our trivia guidelines. :::Meh, I don't even know how to feel. It's typical bullshit I manage to pull off anyway when it comes to wikis. --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 21:27, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Japanese wiki information
For starters, talk pages really shouldn't be used for raw information dumps. Besides, we've been over this repeatedly when it comes to individual move names. Unless you have an official source (e.g., not a fan wiki) to document a move name, it shouldn't be used. If you want to document what the Japanese wiki says for your own interest, use a user subpage; but don't clutter up talk pages with walls of information that's not traceable to anything official. If you edit your userspace page too much, you won't be able to edit it at all anymore. I'm actually quite surprised nobody else notified you about this. :Probation is meant to stop vanity/extraneous userpage edits. The user in question has been using the userpage as a testing ground for future Wiki content from what I understand, so there isn't much justification to this warning. <span style="font-family:Orbitron"><span style="color:maroon">Mega</span><span style="color:silver">Tron1</span></span> 17:44, 19 August 2016 (EDT)
Animation changes
get filed under "aesthetic changes" as long as the animation change itself does not largely affect the move's functionality. Also, another reminder of the trivia thing. You keep adding non-trivia, please stop. <span style="font-family:Monotype Corsiva;font-size:12pt"><span style="color:#083;text-shadow:0px 0px 3px #0b7">Serpent</span> <span style="color:#ed0;text-shadow:0px 0px 3px #fd0">King</span></span> 03:24, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
:Also a lot of them are very minor changes that probably do not need to be mentioned anyway. 4 is a different game from Brawl...EVERY move has at least a different animation. <span style="font-family:Monotype Corsiva;font-size:12pt"><span style="color:#083;text-shadow:0px 0px 3px #0b7">Serpent</span> <span style="color:#ed0;text-shadow:0px 0px 3px #fd0">King</span></span> 03:29, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
::So I just need to throw in new animations only if it changes the move radically in some way, right? Also, in terms of the trivia, me just saying "okay I'll stop" may not actually cause this bullshit to end due to you sounding not easily convinced due to my poor reputation (didn't you read my user page? :P) --SneaselSawashiro (talk) 04:37, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
