| Generally, the rule of thumb is to archive when you are at 32,000 bytes for a talk page. Your 2 archive pages are only around 16,000 and 19,000 bytes. | == On talk page cursing ==
| |
|
| |
| In the bullet points at the top of this talk page, you have written as follows: "No cursing, but mild speech is allowed (such as what the heck)." Just in case you weren't aware, we have a policy on cursing in talk pages, which you can read here: SW:NOT#SmashWiki is not censored. Simply put, not only is this kind of "self-user talk page rule" frowned upon, but it will not be honoured by administration if you attempt to curtail such usage. I personally don't agree with the policy, but as long as it stands you may want to consider editing or removing this bullet to save yourself trouble in this respect. Sincerely, Samuel the Banjo-'Kazooie Boss. | :Daniel hasn't made any edits in 5 months. I don't see the point in you mentioning this; the bridge would've been crossed eventually. --CanvasK (talk) 16:16, March 11, 2022 (EST)

| ::I think this is something that needs to be cleared up. Not Censored doesn't mean you can go around using offensive language on people's talk pages that makes them uncomfortable. It means that articles won't censor profanities where their usage is relevant, nor will it censor out details on controversies that may not be appropriate for young readers.

| ::You seem to be implying that SW:NOT gives you protection to enter other users' talk pages and start swearing at them. It doesn't. | :::Yeah, Canvas is right, I probably should talk to him on Discord instead. But Alex, the policy clearly advises against setting in place "rules" like this one for your talk page. Of course it doesn't mean it's cool to go swearing at people for no reason; at the same time, however, it's protecting people from administrative action if they sporadically drop the F-bomb in the middle of a stern or angry comment. Daniel's "rule" can easily be re-worded to kindly request that such language be refrained from, as opposed to right now where it's written like a strict policy; I was just letting him know that such a personal "policy" is unenforceable and unadvisable. Sincerely, Samuel the Banjo-'Kazooie Boss. | :::Little addendum here: while NOT doesn’t say it’s not okay to go around swearing at people (tho I agree it probably should), that sort of behaviour would be covered in SW:NPA. So such a policy amendment may not be so necessary. Black Vulpine the 🦊Furry🐺. | ::::"it's protecting people from administrative action if they sporadically drop the F-bomb in the middle of a stern or angry comment". No, no, no. That's not what it means. You can be issued warnings for doing that, as it would most likely be seen as inappropriate talk page behaviour, and if that sort of behaviour continued, you could be punished. SW:NOT does not provide protection for using swears in anger or aggression. The purpose of that rule is to allow such language to be used where it is appropriate, such as in quotes, not as a green flag to use it when you're unhappy with another user. Yes, you could argue that this user doesn't have the right to prohibit the use of such words on his talk page, but then he doesn't have the right to enforce any of his talk page rules. They are clearly meant to be informative, rather than enforceable. It is perfectly fine to request users do not use profanity on a user talk page, and it's frankly very unlikely that it would be necessary to do so. | :::::To clarify, I'm not referring to swears that clearly violate SW:NPA, but rather swears that are merely used for emphasis in a negative context (e.g. "this Wiki has f-ing stupid policies" or "that's a s--- response to my question"). This is something the admins do all the time, and in all my talk page digging I've never seen anyone reprimanded for non-personal attack cussery (by all means, demonstrate otherwise if you can), so I'm quite frankly dumbfounded by your response, Alex.

| :::::The policy in question literally explicitly states of talk page discussion: "while personal attacks are to be avoided, SmashWiki has no policies that prohibit(!!!) profanity or language that some people may find vulgar. Attempts to prohibit other users from using such language (such as through self-user talk page rules) is frowned upon, and will not be enforced by the administration if the language is not abusive." I don't see where the argument is. When someone comes onto this talk page and says something like "please f-ing stop creating incomplete pages," which most certainly isn't a personal attack (and wouldn't even be out of character for someone like Omega Tyrant), what is Daniel gonna do that this policy doesn't "frown upon?"

| :::::I wasn't even outright asking Danny to remove or alter any of his "rules," since they aren't technically a violation; I just thought that he might want to reconsider that one, since it sounded, at least to me, like he wasn't aware of the relevant policy. Sincerely, Samuel the Banjo-'Kazooie Boss. | It's simple, we do not forbid swearing that does not violate SW:NPA, and that is all there is to it. We are not going to enforce against people casually saying "fuck" or whatever. Omega Tyrant 19:16, March 11, 2022 (EST)
