I think your random thoughts could have uncovered a conspiracy - Is it any coincidence that the higher tiered characters might have more costumes? :Well, I usually like to mark user page edits as minor. Also, look at these data. 
:For SSB (All characters have 4 in 1v1s, but I counted additional colors that can be used in 2v2s [Yoshi counts as a 4 because 2 are only used by Yoshi Team]).
::Average tier list placing for characters with 4 costumes: 6.8571.
::Average tier list placing for characters with 5 costumes: 6.5.
::Average tier list placing for characters with 6 costumes: 4.

:For Melee: 
::Average tier list placing for characters with 4 costumes: 14.9. 
::Average tier placing for 5 costumes: 11.6154.
::Average tier placing for 6 costumes: 17, but there are only 3, so we can't be too sure about it.

:For Brawl, only 6 characters don't have 6 costumes, but I'll compile some data anyway.
