'''The Box''' is an online tournament series held by {{Team|Team Liquid}} on {{Sm|Hungrybox}}'s [[Twitch]] channel. The series originally started with {{Trn|The Box}} and consisted of a weekly (Juice Box) held on Wednesdays as well as a monthly at the end of each month (Lunch Box) limited to [[Hungrybox]]'s Twitch subscribers. The series was sponsored by [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinbase ''Coinbase''] in February 2022, which shifted focus to the weeklies, now renamed to The Coinbox, with $2,000–$3,000 prize pools. Currently, ''Ultimate'' Coinboxes are held biweekly on Wednesdays with a $2,000 prize pool, with different games rotating each month. Most tournaments in the series are region-locked to North America as well as The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Unaffiliated with Team Liquid or Coinbase, Hungrybox began running smaller, single-elimation events branded as "The To-Go Box" in late May 2024, with the first event being for ''Melee''. These tournaments are intended to be used for more frequent practice and have more experimental rulesets than the Coinbox series.

While The Coinbox started as an ''Ultimate'' series, ''Melee'' began being run in February 2023, switching games every week, with ''Ultimate'' on Wednesdays and ''Melee'' on Tuesdays. However, on November 8th, 2023, following the announcement of the [[Nintendo Community Tournament Guidelines]], Hungrybox announced that Team Liquid would not be seeking a license for ''Melee'' Coinboxes due to the usage of [[Slippi]], and that the final ''Melee'' Coinbox would be [https://www.start.gg/tournament/the-final-melee-coinbox-full-bo5-6-000-prize-pool/details Coinbox #84].<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAmidph6QU4|title=The Future of Coinbox (My Smash Tournament Series)}}</ref> There were ultimately 18 ''Melee'' Coinboxes held throughout 2023, of which {{Sm|Cody Schwab}} won an impressive 11 of the 14 that he entered. {{SSBU|Steve}} has had mixed legality throughout the history of The Coinbox series. Following [https://www.start.gg/tournament/the-coinbox-51-ultimate/details Coinbox #51], Steve was indefinitely banned from The Coinbox on March 2nd, 2023, with Hungrybox stating that the discovery of the [[Phantom MLG]] tech and the difficulties of banning it on its own, especially online, was the "straw that broke the camel's back."<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-EvpwYjAOA&t=779s|title=Steve Ban}}</ref> This lasted until January 2024, when Hungrybox announced that Steve would be unbanned on the first Coinbox of each month of 2024, beginning with [https://www.start.gg/tournament/the-coinbox-87/details Coinbox #87], stating that he didn't want to have a complete ban on a character which is legal in the majority of regions around the world.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/LiquidHbox/status/1744851082063319130|title=Steve partial unban}}</ref> Steve was later fully unbanned on April 1st, 2024, when the series shifted from weekly to biweekly.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/LiquidHbox/status/1774968179111989383|title=Steve unban}}</ref> Steve has ultimately been banned from a total of 24 Coinboxes, those being #53-86, #88, #89, #93, #95, #96, and #97.
