International Video Gaming Federation Northwest Regional Festival and Tournament, shortened as IVGF Northwest or IVGF Seattle, was a Super Smash Bros. Melee | International Video Gaming Federation Northwest Regional Festival and Tournament, shortened as IVGF Northwest or IVGF Seattle, was a Super Smash Bros. Melee regional tournament run by the International Video Game Federation on March 1st, 2003 alongside Tekken 4, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Unreal Tournament 2003: Death Match. The ruleset for the tournament seems to have been "1v1, best of 1, double elim, items on lowfact or medium, almost all stages on random". Recipherus was the winner, and he teamed up with Matt Deezie to reach the finals. A number of sources have given 151 as the number of entrants Melee had, which would have made it the largest Smash tournament at the time, though this number lacks documentation to prove its veracity. Across every game there were competitors from eight US states, Canada, and Japan, however it's possible that the sole Japanese player was Kei, who was living in Washington at the time. The large payout, including $8,000 for first place, could probably be attributed to the unusually high entrance fee, $50 per competitor.
As implied by the event's name | As implied by the event's name, this was the first event of a planned 10-city 2003 circuit. However, judging by the lack of results online, it seems as if the entire operation collapsed after only the first tournament. The other planned locations were: Northern California (San Francisco/ San Jose), Southern California (Los Angeles/ Orange County), Rocky Mountain Region (Denver, CO), SouthWest Region (Dallas, TX), Mid-America Region (Chicago, IL) New England (Boston, MA), Greater New York (New York City/ Meadowlands), Mid-Atlantic Region (Philadelphia, PA), SouthEast Region (Atlanta, GA).
