'''GENESIS 5''' was the 5th edition of the [[GENESIS (tournament series)|GENESIS tournament series]]. It took place in Oakland, California, from January 19th to the 21st, 2018. The event featured singles and doubles tournaments for ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', and {{forwiiu}}, as well as side events for ''{{s|wikipedia|Rivals of Aether}}'', ''{{s|inkipedia|Splatoon 2}}'', ''{{s|wikipedia|Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite}}'', ''{{s|wikipedia|Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition}}'', ''{{s|bulbapedia|Pokkén Tournament DX}}'', and ''{{s|wikipedia|Dance Dance Revolution Extreme}}''.

In the ''Melee'' singles event, {{Sm|Plup}} won the tournament in the biggest tournament victory of his career, taking down {{Sm|Hungrybox}}, {{Sm|Armada}}, and {{Sm|Mango}}, the 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-ranked players in the world on his way to the trophy. While the previous four iterations of GENESIS had featured Mango and Armada in grand finals, the two finished at 5th and 4th place respectively. Both were sent to losers' by  {{Sm|Plup}} and eliminated by {{Sm|Leffen}}. The tournament also featured two extremely competitive sets between Hungrybox and Leffen, fueled by intense drama between the two on Twitter and other social media sites; Hungrybox ultimately won both five-game sets in winners' semis and losers' finals. [[Team Dignitas]]' newly-sponsored players, {{Sm|Lucky}} and {{Sm|HugS}}, both made deep runs into bracket, finishing at 5th and 7th place respectively, and fan favorite {{Sm|aMSa}} delivered a strong performance once again, defeating {{Sm|Kage}}, {{Sm|SFAT}}, and {{Sm|Wizzrobe}} before being eliminated by {{Sm|Hungrybox}} and {{Sm|HugS}} to end his run at a 9th place finish.

*Doubles in Smash 64 was played with {{SSB|Final Destination}} and [[Duel Zone]] legal in addition to {{SSB|Dream Land}}.
*Notably, none of the active "Gods" ({{Sm|Armada}}, {{Sm|Mango}}, {{Sm|Hungrybox}}, and {{Sm|Mew2King}}) played each other at any point in Melee Singles. Each one was either sent to the Losers Bracket or eliminated by {{Sm|Leffen}}, {{Sm|Plup}}, or {{Sm|Lucky}}.
