Frostbite 2020 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor tournament held in Detroit, Michigan, from February 21st-23rd, 2020.
Tournament summary
At 1,280 entrants for singles, the Ultimate event is the largest singles event at Frostbite, as well as the second-largest Ultimate event in the Midwest after Smash 'N' Splash 5. In-line with the large entrants count, the tournament featured a slew of talent, including every North American player ranked on the Fall 2019 PGRU sans ESAM and Nicko as well as many of Japan's best players. This tournament most notably marked Paseriman's first major international event in Ultimate, and remained only one of two major international events Paseriman attended in his Ultimate career. With many top players in attendance, Frostbite 2020 is widely considered one of the most difficult tournaments of the early metagame, as well as one of the most difficult Midwest events.
The event is most famous for MkLeo's extensive losers' run. Leo was first sent into losers by Prodigy, who surprised audiences by 3-0ing MkLeo in Winner's Round 1 of Top 96, becoming the fourth player to 3-0 MkLeo and only the second player to do so on his Joker. Despite the upset, MkLeo clawed through the loser's bracket, eliminating Salem 3-1, Dark Wizzy 3-0, Samsora 3-0, Nairo 3-1, Zackray 3-2, Dabuz 3-0, Tea 3-2, and Tweek 3-2 to meet Maister in Grand Finals, the first "all-Mexican" Grand Finals at a major. MkLeo then swiftly defeated Maister 6-0 to win the event. Many players have since considered MkLeo's run as the greatest loser's run to victory in Ultimate, as he eliminated 6 of the Fall 2019 PGRU's top 10; the closest player to eliminate MkLeo was Tea, who was only frames away from hitting his forward smash in their final game. In addition, this tournament also had the first appearance of MkLeo's Byleth, as MkLeo used Byleth in the final game of the event.
Outside of MkLeo, this event is also known for Toast's run to 7th. Although he had been gaining traction since the last season, Toast was finally able to achieve his major breakout event at Frostbite 2020, defeating Kameme 3-1 and Samsora 3-1 to make it into top 24, where after losing to Maister 3-1 he defeated 3-2 to enter top 8, the first and only solo-Young Link player to place top 8 at a major/supermajor. Toast's performance at Frostbite 2020 remains the best performance for a Young Link player at a supermajor and is often considered one of Young Link's best overall major performances, alongside Toast's run at CEO 2022.
Conversely, several players greatly underperformed at the event. Both Marss and Shuton, the winners' of the same-weekend supermajors GENESIS 7 and EVO Japan 2020, were out at 17th, losing to players from the other's respective countries, with Marss losing to Paseriman and Zackray and Shuton losing to Elegant and Light. In addition, this tournament tied Frostbite 2019 and Mainstage as Samsora's worst performance at a major and ended Dark Wizzy's streak of top 8 finishes (that did not include full DQs) that began with Shine 2019. Finally, following Cosmos's disappointing finish at the event, he began to slowly shift away from Inkling, opting to initially focus on his Pikachu instead.
