This tournament sparked controversy on [[reddit]] and social media regarding {{SSB4|Bayonetta}} and her perceived status as an [[overpowered]] character, due to the high number of players using her throughout the bracket, while three of the Top 8 players primarily used Bayonetta on that period of the bracket. A topic of debate sparked on whether or not the character should be banned completely from tournament play, citing significantly decreased viewership throughout Top 8 compared to previous major tournaments, as well as unfavorable reactions from the crowd and commentators on stream.
