The '''2GG Championship Series''', or '''2GGC''', was a {{forwiiu}} circuit of tournaments held throughout 2017 in Southern California as a collaboration between [[2GGaming]] and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esports_Arena Esports Arena]. It was announced at the end of [[2GGT: ZeRo Saga]], and is the spiritual successor to the [[2GGT]] series of tournaments. The tournament began on January 14th with {{Trn|2GGC: GENESIS Saga}} and a new event was held every month -- barring April -- until {{Trn|2GGC: MkLeo Saga}} on November 4th. The [[Tournament:2GG Championship|circuit finale]] was held from December 1st-3rd.

The tournament circuit remains the most prestigious tournament circuit in ''Smash 4'', with all events in the circuit reaching major status at minimum and greatly bolstering the number of ''Smash 4'' majors that year. Tournaments in the series also often flew out players who mained characters that matched the theme of the tournament, allowing many international players a chance at competing in the United States.

==Format==
Twelve tournaments were hosted, one for each month of the year. A prize pot bonus of $50,000 was distributed across the tournaments from January to November, and another $50,000 was in play for the final [[2GG Championship]] tournament in December, making for a total of a $100,000 pot bonus throughout the entire circuit. Players who won any of the tournaments in the series qualified into the Championship, having their travel expenses paid for; other players could also qualify through points earned by placing top 16 in circuit tournaments. Four of the tournaments had the qualifying points doubled, those being [[2GGC: Civil War]], [[2GGC: Nairo Saga]], [[2GGC: Fire Emblem Saga]] and [[2GGC: MkLeo Saga]] (the first three being considered "season finales"). In the end, a total of 20 players were qualified.

*Greninja Saga was originally scheduled for April 22nd. However, due to several top Greninja players (ex. {{Sm|iStudying}} and {{Sm|Some}}) being unable to attend the event, it was decided to move the event to May 20th in place of 2GGC: May Saga and not hold a Saga in April (with a Last Chance Qualifier being scheduled later to make up for it).

*The "Saga Curse" that occurred in the [[2GGT]] series is considered to have continued into the 2GG Championship Series. Here is each sagas' featured player(s) highest placings:
**GENESIS Saga - 1st* ({{Sm|ZeRo}}. While he is a past GENESIS winner, the curse ruling says he must win [[GENESIS 4]], the tournament the saga is dedicated to promoting. ZeRo placed 3rd at that tournament, so the curse still stands).
***This is the only curse to have been a result of a certain player winning a Saga and then failing to win ''another'' tournament, as opposed to failing to win the Saga they represent.
