'''Toad''' ({{ja|キノピオ|Kinopio}}, ''Kinopio'') is a recurring character from the {{uv|Mario}} games, and serves as [[Princess Peach]]'s assistant. He plays a sidekick role for the Mario Bros. in the games, often assisting them in a variety of ways on their adventure.

Toads are the main residents of the Mushroom Kingdom and serve under the rule of [[Princess Peach]]. Toad as a species originates from ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Bros.}}'', where the player meets one at the end of the first 7 worlds and they would deliver the famous line "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" Toad made his playable debut in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Bros. 2}}'' (known as ''Super Mario USA'' in Japan) as one of the four playable characters. He was given the traits of the fastest running speed and the weakest jump, traits which would return with the playable appearance of a blue Toad in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 3D World}}''. Toad has been a playable character in numerous ''Mario'' spin-offs and a common NPC in most Mario games. In ''Smash'', a Toad appears as part of both Princess Peach and [[Princess Daisy]]'s movesets.

Toads appear with a wide variety of different colored spots on their cap, with most common being red spots, withe blue and yellow also being playable, and manyThe more appearing as NPC characters. There are also several special toads that have appeared throughout the years. {{s|mariowiki|Toadette}} is a "female" toad that looks similar to regular pink toads, but with a pink cap and white spots. She wears a unique dress and vest and has braid-like plaits attatched to her head. {{s|mariowiki|Toadsworth}} is an old told with brown spots, large mustache and a cane with a mushroom cap on it. Toadsworth is frequently seen with Peach as her assistant. {{s|mariowiki|Captain Toad}} is a treasure hunter that always wears his full backpack and flashlight headband. Captain toad would appear as a side character in several games before starring in his own spin-off title ''{{s|mariowiki|Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker}}''.

In ''Super Smash Bros. Melee'', Toad is used as [[Peach (SSBM)|Peach's]] [[Toad (move)|neutral special move]] which can be used to counter an enemy's attack.

Toad is also seen in the background of the first level of [[Adventure Mode]], running behind the arena with the [[Yoshi (SSBM)|Yoshis]], and again behind the finish line.

In addition to returning as {{SSBU|Peach}}'s neutral special (in which he now actively guards her rather than be used like a human shield), Toad now attacks alongside her for her [[pummel]] and [[throw]]s. A {{s|mariowiki|Blue Toad}} also appears as part of {{SSBU|Daisy}}’s moveset, acting in the exact same fashion as Peach’s Toad. The Toad Mii outfit also returns.
