''The Mysterious Murasame Castle'' was a Japan-only release for the Family Computer Disk System, a disk-based expansion console exclusive to the Japanese Famicom. It was one of the system's early titles, and its second original title after ''The Legend of Zelda''. The release of Koei Tecmo's ''{{iw|wikipedia|Samurai Warriors 3}}'' for the Wii allowed players to experience ''The Mysterious Murasame Castle'' for the first time outside of Japan, as ''Samurai Warriors 3'' featured a 3D remake of the game as a separate mode. However, in 2014, over 28 years after its release, the original game was re-released worldwide through Virtual Console on the Nintendo 3DS, and again on the [[Nintendo Switch]] Online service in 2023.
