Any insight into why this term was coined as the "wall" of pain? (the pain part is obvious enough).Zixor (talk) 22:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

:Because when AOB started using jigglypuff and did this to me, I cried out to him in frustration that it was like fighting against a "wall of pain". The difficulty I had in approaching the constant barrage of long hitboxes made it feel like an impenetrable barrier.  The name stuck when we called it that on smashboards. That's about it. --Amorasaki (talk) 15:00, 21 June 2017 (EDT)

It's an offensive move though; you're usually pushing them back, right? Walls don't move, except for demon walls... Zixor (talk) 04:11, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps because the opponent may be unable to get past it, like a wall?
How did the term originate? Zixor (talk) 23:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

It may be the case that some characters are virtually incapable of seeing any usefull results from employing this technique, as they simply can't move backwards far enough or qucikly enough, but these levels vary greatly. Without question, Jigglypuff is the only character who can perform the "true" and most effective Wall of Pain, but I feel that the general definition / application of this technique needs to be broadened. ::Obviously, the WoP is an issue with much debate; and I feel that matters of opinion (degrees of effectiveness, etc...) should be discussed and hammered out here before changes are made to the article. Otherwise people are bound to disagree and engage in edit wars. Zixor (talk) 23:14, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

:::There is more to a wall of pain than jumping over the edge, attacking and jumping backwards. That's just edge-guarding. Wall of pain is where you jump off the edge and use aerials to create a defense that they cannot get past at all as opposed to what you suggested which is an attempt to move the person farther from the edge with a single aerial. The more jumps you have, aerials, and air-maneuverability all contribute to how good your wall of pain is. All in all it's how long you can stay out there, how much damage/knockback you can do, and how successfully you can block off the opponent's chance of escaping, therefore Jigglypuff is definitely the best.<span style="color:Orange;">highway</span> <span style="color:Red;">pumpy</span> <span style="color:Yellow;">sfs</span> 19:43, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

::-Very good points. You should definitely elaborate on this in the article :)

R.O.B's Robo Burner doesn't make an effective WOP, for he doesn't have decent horizontal recovery, and Robo Burner would soon run out of charge. But, I'm not a R.O.B player, so correct me if I'm wrong. PokeLuver (talk) 16:18, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Other Characters
Guys, we need to extend this article, at least the fence of pain part, to include all characters capable of performing it as Meta Knight (PM), Pit (PM), and (Melee) Captain Falcon (with his Knee Smash) are all said to have wall of pain techniques in the articles but these statements are not acknowledged here. And many characters (such as Toon Link (SSBB)) are said to have fence of pain abilities but once again this is not acknowledged by this article. Given, we should be trepidatious about including project m here, but still aside from that there are many articles about unmodded characters that include the information, yet are unnoticed and often unexplained. We either need a clean up on what defines a wall (or fence) of pain or we need to edit this article ASAP. 71.189.17.14 01:15, 5 December 2013 (EST)
