:::Well, as I said, people never call them Smashers in the context of the actual game. You don't hear people say "Pikachu's my best Smasher", they say "Pikachu's my best character". That said, the term "Smasher" pops up too frequently in the in-universe context to be ignorable (in my opinion, anyway). The terms "character" (which only makes sense out-of-universe) and "fighter" (which the Dojo!! used but only makes sense in the context of an actual fight) don't seem to stick with fans.
