I agree that when we're referring to this universe that we should label it as the ''Mother'' universe rather than the ''EarthBound'' universe. In Japan, all three games have "Mother" as the title: ''Mother'', ''Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back'', and ''Mother 3''. So this means that ''Mother'' is the real name of the games (this is more apparent when Shigesato Itoi, creator of the series, said that the inspiration for the name came from John Lennon's song "Mother"). :No. It's called Earthbound here. Brawl refers to it as the Earthbound series. That would be like calling Bowser "Koopa" because that is his Japanese name. And you are incorrect that most of the games only have the title "Mother". The first game was intended to be called Earth Bound when it was released here, but unfortunately it got cancelled. The third game was going to be called "Earthbound 64" but that too got cancelled. So really, the series is called Earthbound. I feel that it is a little redundant to write ''Mother/EarthBound Beginnings'' every time we refer to the first installment of the series. Would it be better to drop one of either ''Mother'' or ''EarthBound Beginnings'' so that we don't have to write a slash mark and the alternate name all the time? I personally feel we should keep the EarthBound Beginnings name, because that would provide more consistency with the EarthBound game, as well as the name of the page itself. ::It's a messy situation either way, since both names have legitimate reasons to be used but using both every time is excessive. What makes up my mind on the subject, though, is that Smash itself exclusively uses "Mother", since the "EarthBound Beginnings" name didn't exist until last month; on top of that, the game's been widely known by the "Mother" title in English for literally decades. If we were to choose one of the two to prioritize, I think those two factors are what should drive the decision. I'd personally advocate that the game be called "Mother" in general, and that the "EarthBound Beginnings" name be used only to refer to the history of the VC release. == EarthBound Beginnings or Mother ==

During my rewrite I've noticed some sections on this page (as well as the wiki overall) refer to the first game as Mother, and others as EarthBound Beginnings. It's rather inconsistant now, so I feel we should have a consistent name to use. The game has been out for five years and both terms overall are equally used, plus now in Ultimate the game is consistently referred to as EarthBound Beginnings. While the title Mother has been used longer, still using the name feels rather outdated, yet even still EarthBound Beginnings has only been used recently. Despite us not always using official names, I believe, much like with the Powershield debate, EarthBound Beginnings sees usage in both the fandom and now officially, further adding to this when I discussed this on WikiBound it was agreed we use EarthBound Beginnings in general, while Mother is to be used specifically for the Japanese release.

Both names have good reasons to be used, and as for me personally though the way I think is the best is to use "Mother" when referring to the Japanese release or in an instance where it's specifically referred to as such in Smash, and the general term should be "EarthBound Beginnings". The same can be done with other articles, and if necessary we can clarify at the start of the article with something like "(known as Mother in japan)" or "(localized as EarthBound Beginnings)" and use EarthBound Beginnings as the general term throught the article. :I think it would make sense to standardize using EarthBound Beginnings at this point; the name "EarthBound Beginnings" has been in common use for five years now, it's the official English title of the game, and it is the name used ingame as of Ultimate. However, I think it would be appropriate to leave it as "Mother" when previous Smash games have used it - for example, stickers in Brawl. Though, I'm not sure if those kinds of clarifications would be necessary... considering that articles also already state the Japanese name at the beginning anyway, it feels redundant to add a "known as Mother in Japan" bit there. Yes, they're were planned by the devs to be added into the game, but they eventually cut them mid development, and as such are not there representing those series in the actual game anymore, unlike the likes of "Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise".
