The '''Super Leaf''' ({{ja|スーパーこのは|Sūpākonoha}}, ''Super Leaf'') is an item from the ''{{uv|Mario}}'' universe that appears in ''[[Super Smash Bros. 4]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''. It gives the player raccoon ears and a tail, allowing them to float for about three seconds by holding the jump button in a similar manner to [[Peach]]'s (or {{SSBU|Daisy}}'s in ''Ultimate'') [[floating]] ability; unlike hers, though, the player will still slowly descend. If released before its time runs out, one can reactivate it at any time by holding down the jump button again. While floating, a character can still perform all of their attacks as normal. It can not be used while in a helpless state, such as after many characters' up special moves.

If Peach uses it, then her own float ability will activate first. As soon as she stops using her float ability, or its time runs out, then the Super Leaf's effect will become active.

In ''Ultimate'', aerial attacks performed during the Super Leaf's float will never apply the new multiplier for short hop aerial attacks no matter how close to the floor the attacker is, much like Peach's aerials when done out of her float.

Prior to becoming an item, it was mentioned in passing in the trophy description for Raccoon Mario in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]''.

==Origin==

Super Leaves first appeared in ''{{s|supermariowiki|Super Mario Bros. 3}}'' as a power-up item and have returned in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 3D Land}}'' and numerous games since. It turned [[Mario]] and [[Luigi]] into {{s|mariowiki|Raccoon Mario}} and Raccoon Luigi, respectively (Fox Luigi in ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros. 2}}'', and {{s|mariowiki|Tanooki Mario}} and Kitsune Luigi instead in ''Super Mario 3D Land'' and ''Super Mario 3D World''), which let them slow descent (or briefly fly if they ran far enough) by waving the tail, and hit enemies and blocks by swinging their tail. The design of the leaf itself is based on its design as of ''Super Mario 3D Land''. Its function in the ''Super Smash Bros.'' games is also similar; it gives the fighter raccoon ears and a tail like Raccoon Mario, and allows the player to slow their fall, like in the ''Mario'' series. However, it does not allow the character to fly after running far enough, or attack with the tail.

==Trivia==
*At one point in time, it was considered to allow characters to attack with their tail, another feature the Super Leaf gives in the ''Mario'' games, though it was decided against before the final release of ''Super Smash Bros. 4''.
*Characters that naturally have a tail will have a second tail upon picking up the Super Leaf. Conversely, the raccoon ears are not visible on characters that already have pointed ears (with {{SSBU|Fox}} and {{SSBU|Lucario}} being two examples), with the exception of {{SSBU|Pichu}}.
*Although {{SSBU|Luigi}}'s Raccoon and Tanooki forms are Kitsune-themed (as of ''Super Mario 3D Land''), Luigi gains raccoon ears and a tail instead of fox ones if he uses a Super Leaf, like every other character. Similarly, if he grabs 100 coins on [[Golden Plains]], he turns [[Gold fighter|golden]] instead of silver, unlike in ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros. 2}}''.
*For unknown reasons, {{SSBU|Meta Knight}} and {{SSBU|Olimar}} cannot float with the Super Leaf and simultaneously perform aerials. This applies to {{SSB4|Ness}}, {{SSB4|Lucas}} and {{SSB4|Mewtwo}} as well, but only in ''SSB4''.
**Olimar's inability to attack while floating may be because if he could the Pikmin would have to spawn next to him in an unnatural manner.
*When a {{SSBU|Mii Fighter}} grabs a Super Leaf, they will only gain raccoon ears if they are not wearing any headgear; if they are, then only the tail will appear.
*{{SSBU|Bowser}} and {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}} can cancel the falling in their [[stall-then-fall]] [[down aerial]]s by activating the Super Leaf float after initiating their down aerials.
**{{SSBU|Toon Link}} can also do this, but only if he hits an opponent.
**The {{SSBU|Ice Climbers}} can also do this, but the falling is canceled very late into the move.
*When {{SSBU|Mario}}, {{SSBU|Diddy Kong}} and {{SSBU|Terry}} equip the Super Leaf and use a taunt that removes their hat, the ears stay on their hat instead of their head. The same applies to the [[Bunny Hood]].
