It is the third-largest Melee tournament to date, with 970 entrants (behind [[Apex 2015]]'s 1,037 entrants and [[EVO 2015]]'s 1,869 entrants), and was the largest Melee tournament for over six months, surpassing the record of 709 entrants set by EVO 2013 the previous year.

The tournament was expected to be the wrap-up of the rivalry between {{Sm|Mango}} and {{Sm|Armada}}, the two best ''Melee'' players in the world; they had defeated each other in grand finals in several national tournaments over the previous few months. However, Armada, using {{SSBM|Young Link}}, lost to Hungrybox's {{SSBM|Jigglypuff}} in both winners' semifinals and losers' finals, placing 3rd. Hungrybox moved on to grand finals and was defeated by Mango's {{SSBM|Fox}}.

Notable matches

EVO 2014 included some of the strongest performances for Silent Wolf and Axe in a national tournament. They faced off in losers' top 8, splitting the first two matches with two-stock wins. In the final match, Axe counterpicked Fountain of Dreams, where he four-stocked Silent Wolf in under a minute, proceeding to losers' quarters.[3]
