You can also replace <code><nowiki>{{#ifeq:{{{#var:notes|}}}|y|5|4}}</nowiki></code> with <code><nowiki>{{#if:{{{#var:notes|}}}|5|4}}</nowiki></code> because "notes" will always either be "y" or nothing, making a check for the only possible option pointless. |
