'''Yei''' (pronounced "Jay") is a Smasher from [[Costa Rica]] known for having a diverse roster in all ''Smash'' games he plays. He is considered the greatest Costa Rican player of all time and one of the greatest [[Central America]]n players of all time, being the region's best player in ''[[Smash 4]]'' and early-''[[Ultimate]]''.

He first made his debut in ''Smash 4'', where he mainly played {{SSB4|Lucina}} and {{SSB4|Marth}}. He first broke out onto the scene after placing 9th at {{Trn|Smash Factor 7}}, defeating notable Mexican players such as {{Sm|Rox}} and {{Sm|Cloudy}} to place 9th. He became better known internationally for his performances in ''Ultimate'', where he was best known for playing {{SSBU|Meta Knight}}, though he had also played {{SSBU|Wario}}, {{SSBU|Lucina}}, {{SSBU|Chrom}}, and {{SSBU|Palutena}} extensively throughout his career. He is considered the best Meta Knight player in the early metagame, especially following his performances at the major {{Trn|Smash Factor 8}}, where he placed 7th after defeating {{Sm|Mr. E}}, and at the Mexican invitational {{Trn|Smash Vertex}}, where he used Meta Knight to defeat {{Sm|Maister}} and {{Sm|Joker}} and a mix of Meta Knight and other characters to defeat {{Sm|Meme}}. Outside of this performance, he also defeated {{Sm|Chag}} at {{Trn|SWT: Central America Ultimate Regional Finals}} with Meta Knight.

Starting January 21st, 2023, Yei was banned from attending tournaments in Costa Rica for a year due to alleged poor behavior,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/Smash_CostaRica/status/1616933725094248449|title=Yei's Costa Rican ban}}</ref> though he remained active in other Central American regions.

Yei joined the Costa Rican organization OG Esports (not to be confused with the famous Danish organization {{Team|OG}}) on July 9th, 2019<ref>[https://twitter.com/OGEsportsGG/status/1169801031657693185 Denle una cálida bienvenida a nuestro nuevo jugador Jason 'Yei' Valverde Mora]</ref>. The organization eventually merged with the American team {{Team|Fatal Ambition}} in early 2021 and Yei was kept in the roster. However, the organization became inactive in early 2022 and Yei removed Fatal Ambition's tags from his socials since then.

==Playstyle==
Yei is a versatile player, able to switch playstyles quickly when necessary. His most consistent approach, however, is to maintain an aggressive, yet calculated and patient neutral game. From his aggression, he will go for deep edgeguards, juggles, and early kills.

For Palutena, he pairs a strong neutral and consistent punish game, and often uses Palutena's tools to go for quick kills or capitalize as much as he can. For Meta Knight, he plays for combos, spacing, and quick edgeguarding, while also using Meta Knight’s jumps to make his landings difficult to punish. He is highly proficient in Meta Knight's ladder combo, able to consistently ladder and finish off his opponents even at higher percents when the combo is DI-prone and much harder to complete.
