Despite his early elimination from losers, Nairo still finished with a placement of 5th.


In the last two months of 2016, he made back-to-back 4th place finishes at {{Trn|KTAR XIX}} and {{Trn|UGC Smash Open}}, and ended the year with a 5th place finish at {{Trn|2GGT: ZeRo Saga}}. While started with some rough patches at the beginning of the year, a supermajor win in Super Smash Con 2016 and his latter half year consistency solidified him as top 3 player of the year, placing 3rd on the [[PGR v2]].

In 2016 he would continue his strong results although he had a few lower placings, most noticeably with {{Trn|Pound 2016}} being his worst placement in a ''Smash 4'' tournament during the game's prime, being sent to losers round 1 by {{Sm|saj}} 2-1 and then being eliminated from the tournament by {{Sm|Mr.II}} in another 2-1 set, ending with a placement of 49th. However, this wouldn't mean much as a month later he placed 1st at {{Trn|MomoCon 2016}}, beating Ally 3-2.  


Nairo became a much stronger player in 2017, as after his 17th placement at {{Trn|GENESIS 4}}, he won both [[Umebura Tokaigi Qualifiers]] and {{Trn|Niconico Tokaigi 2017}}, defeating Ally and many top Japanese players such as {{Sm|KEN}}, {{Sm|Abadango}}, and {{Sm|Kirihara}}.  
Similarly, he had placements of 17th at {{Trn|CEO 2016}} and 13th at {{Trn|EVO 2017}}, but then win 1st place at {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2016}}, taking out 6WX 3-1, both {{Sm|VoiD}} and Mr.R 3-2, and Dabuz 3-1.  


Not long after, he placed 3rd at {{Trn|Frostbite 2017}} fighting through many top players such as Dabuz, {{Sm|WaDi}}, and {{Sm|Shuton}}. He only lost to ZeRo who double-eliminated him, but was a much cleaner major run in comparison to GENESIS for Nairo.
Afterwards, he would finish in 7th place at {{Trn|The Big House 6}}, 2nd at {{Trn|Smash the Record 2016}} where he lost to ESAM 3-2 in grand finals, 4th at both {{Trn|KTAR XIX}} and {{Trn|UGC Smash Open}}, and ended the year with {{Trn|2GGT: ZeRo Saga}} where he placed 5th after losing to ZeRo 3-1.


After Frostbite 2017, the next major tournament Nairo attended was {{Trn|2GGC: Civil War}}. This tournament was and remains one of the most stacked tournaments in ''Smash 4'' history. Unfortunately for Nairo, he missed out on top 8, losing to Fatality in the mist of his "Cinderella run" and lost to Locus in losers, finishing at 9th.
Nairo would later become a much stronger player in 2017 as after his 17th placement at {{Trn|GENESIS 4}}, he would later win both [[Umebura Tokaigi Qualifiers]] and {{Trn|Niconico Tokaigi 2017}} where he won against Ally and many top Japanese players such as {{Sm|KEN}}, {{Sm|Abadango}}, and {{Sm|Kirihara}}.  


From April to May, he attended about four of the next majors, placing 3rd at {{Trn|CEO Dreamland}} defeating Dabuz and Marss, 7th at {{Trn|Royal Flush}}, and an unusual 17th at {{Trn|2GGC: Greninja Saga}}, getting upset by {{Sm|Mekos}} before top 64 and had his losers run put to an end by {{Sm|CaptainZack}}.
Not long after he placed 3rd at {{Trn|Frostbite 2017}} in which he defeated {{Sm|MVD}} 2-0, {{Sm|WaDi}} and {{Sm|Mr E}} 3-1, before being sent to losers by ZeRo in a 3-0 set. In losers, he won against {{Sm|Shuton}} 3-2 and Dabuz 3-0 before losing to ZeRo again in a 3-1 set during losers finals.


Despite underperforming at Greninja Saga, in typical Nairo fashion, he would come back blazing seen with {{Trn|MomoCon 2017}}. He was able maintain his champion title from last year's event, most notably winning his runbacks against ZeRo and Fatality to take the tournament.
At {{Trn|MomoCon 2017}} he was able to place 1st at the event, defeating players such as {{Sm|Myran}} 3-2, VoiD 3-0, {{Sm|Kameme}} and ZeRo 3-1, and Fatality in a close 3-2 set at grand finals.


The next two supermajors, {{Trn|2GGC: Nairo Saga}} and {{Trn|CEO 2017}}, he would make back-to-back 4th place finishes. At the titularly named tournament, he lost to ZeRo and Salem. At {{Trn|CEO 2017}}, he managed to win his runbacks against {{Sm|CaptainZack}} and {{Sm|Salem}} before losing to Larry Lurr and MkLeo.

Unlike the past two years, the PGR ranking was split between the two halves of 2017. He maintained his spot at number 3 on the [[PGR v3]], possibly missed out on recapturing his 2nd best in the world status from 2015 due to the couple of underperformances of the year such as GENESIS 3 and Greninja Saga as well as the prominent rise MkLeo saw around the same time. Regardless, it was a very strong six months for Nairo's competitive play altogether.
Nairo later attended {{Trn|DreamHack Atlanta 2017}} and took out many players such as CaptainZack 3-0, Ally and Dabuz 3-1, and ZeRo and Larry Lurr 3-2. His two losses were both from {{Sm|Salem}} in a 3-0 and 3-1 set, giving him a placement of 4th.


===Remainder of 2017===
After losing 2-1 to {{Sm|Rideae}} at {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2017}}, Nairo went on a lengthy losers run during the event. He defeated {{Sm|Rich Brown}} 2-0, {{Sm|Sinji}} 3-1, {{Sm|komorikiri}} 3-0, {{Sm|Tweek}}, VoiD, and {{Sm|Rivers}} (called Shoyo James at the time) 3-1, {{Sm|WaDi}} 3-2, {{Sm|Mr.R}} and MkLeo 3-1, and placed 1st after winning in two 3-2 sets against ZeRo in grand finals.


The next season for him started with a 2nd at regional {{Trn|Midwest Mayhem 9}}, getting upset by {{Sm|Tyroy}} in top 8 qualifiers and made a lengthy losers run beating players such as Tweek before being eliminated by ZeRo in grand finals. This tournament would follow into the next supermajor of the year, {{Trn|EVO 2017}}, where Nairo would place 5th after grabbing wins over {{Sm|Abadango}} and VoiD with losses to Larry Lurr and Tweek in their runback.
Another great placement happened at {{Trn|Shine 2017}}, where he won against {{Sm|Pink Fresh}} 2-1, {{Sm|ANTi}} and Larry Lurr 3-2, Salem 3-1 until losing to both ZeRo and Tweek 3-1, ending his tournament run at 3rd place.


Nairo later attended {{Trn|DreamHack Atlanta 2017}} and took out multiple top players such as CaptainZack, Ally, Dabuz, ZeRo and a runback against Larry Lurr. However, both of two losses came from {{Sm|Salem}}, a player who was notably on a bit of a hot streak after winning EVO 2017, giving him a placement of 4th.
At {{Trn|2GGC: Fire Emblem Saga}}, he defeated WaDi 3-0 and Kirihara 3-1 until being sent to losers bracket by Salem 3-2. In losers, he continued to defeat VoiD 3-0, Tweek and komorikiri 3-1 before losing to Salem again in a close 3-2 set in grand finals, placing 2nd at the event.


With the two losses to him and his EVO win, Salem started to rival Nairo as the second-best ''Smash 4'' player of 2017 and the two would be neck and neck with each other. Nairo would find his own tournament win that combated Salem's EVO win with {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2017}}. After an upset by {{Sm|Rideae}}, Nairo went on a lengthy losers run defeating a immense caliber of players such as komorikiri, Tweek, VoiD, Mr.R, and MkLeo before double-eliminating ZeRo in grand finals.
He later placed 4th at another 2CCG event, {{Trn|2GGC: MkLeo Saga}}, in which after winning against Kirihara 3-1, he was sent to losers by Tweek 3-1. His losers run had him win against Abadango 3-0 and WaDi 3-2 before KEN eliminated him in a 3-1 set. These two events and a few other 2GGC tournaments allowed Nairo to qualify for {{Trn|2GG Championship}} and will later place 10th.


In terms of consistency between the two players, Nairo would outperform him at tournaments such as the next supermajor of the year, {{Trn|2GGC: MkLeo Saga}} and another major in {{Trn|Shine 2017}} where Nairo placed 4th and 3rd respectively whereas Salem would place 9th and 4th. On occasion, they would sometimes even tie seen with {{Trn|GameTyrant Expo 2017}} where they both placed 9th. Conversely, Salem would outplace him at events such as {{Trn|The Big House 7}} and invitational {{Trn|2GG Championship}}, placing 5th and 3rd whereas Nairo would finish at 9th and 10th place. The two also met at grand finals at both {{Trn|2GGC: Fire Emblem Saga}} and {{Trn|Smash 4 Boot Camp}}, the latter being another invitational done by [[VGBootCamp]]. Ultimately, Nairo would lose to Salem at both of these tournaments.
His last tournament of 2017 was {{Trn|Smash 4 Boot Camp}} where he was one of the 10 players invited to the event by VGBootCamp themselves. He would later place 2nd out of the 16 entrants after losing to Salem in grand finals.

When the season was over, Nairo returned to the top 5, being ranked 4th.

In the latter, he was defeated by {{Sm|Tweek}} in the winners quarterfinals and subsequently eliminated by {{Sm|MkLeo}} in the losers side top 8 qualifier.
Following this, however, he would place 9th at the next 2 majors: {{Trn|GENESIS 7}} and {{Trn|Frostbite 2020}}. In the former, he was sent to losers by {{Sm|ESAM}} and notoriously eliminated by {{Sm|Glutonny}} after he performed a zero-to-death waft combo during the last game. In the latter, he was sent to the losers bracket by {{Sm|Tweek}} in winner's quarterfinals and subsequently eliminated by {{Sm|MkLeo}} in the losers side top 8 qualifier.


During the [[COVID-19]] pandemic, Nairo only made appearances at the {{Trn|Soaked Series Invitational}} and tournaments in {{Trn|The Quarantine Series|series}}, citing a dislike for ''Ultimate'' online.
As a result of the [[COVID-19|COVID-19 pandemic]], Nairo was unable to attend any other tournaments. During the quarantine period, Nairo would only make appearances at {{Trn|Soaked Series Invitational}} and tournaments in {{Trn|The Quarantine Series|series}}.
 
==Sexual misconduct allegations, ban, and repudiation of allegations==

On July 1st, 2020, amidst a [[2020 Super Smash Bros. sexual misconduct allegations|wave of sexual harassment and assault allegations in the community]], a rumor began spreading that Nairo and {{Sm|CaptainZack}} had a sexual encounter. Initially, both brushed it off, with CaptainZack stating that he made it up to impress his friends. However, the next morning, CaptainZack released a Twitlonger where he confirmed the rumors, saying that it happened when he was fifteen and Nairo was twenty, and that he was paid by Nairo to stay silent about the situation.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/CaptainZack_/status/1278574207207686144|title=CaptainZack on his relationship with Nairo}}</ref> Following this, Nairo deactivated his [[Twitter]] account and his brother {{Sm|Ksizzle}} confirmed that "Nairo is done."<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/A1SinceDay1SSB/status/1278596027017236480|title=Ksizzle's statement}}</ref> Nairo eventually reactivated his Twitter and posted a statement apologizing for his actions, saying that he would no longer be active on social media.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-07-03-nintendo-condemns-abuse-as-allegations-spread-across-smash-bros-community|title=Article with Nairo's apology}}</ref> He deleted his social media accounts but created a protected dummy account that had his original Twitter username of NairoMK.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.ssbwiki.com/File:KSizzle_Clarification.png|title=Ksizzle on Nairo's situation}}</ref>

The allegations were brought into question after several statements from CaptainZack's TwitLonger, including the hush money, were revealed to be manipulated information following Tamim (aka {{Sm|Mistake}})'s TwitLonger on September 14th.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1srda66|title=tamim's statement}}</ref> Furthermore, on October 28th, Nairo released a more detailed statement refuting CaptainZack's side of the story, claiming that he had woken up to Zack forcefully performing oral sex on him (which was corroborated by Tamim's statement), that he had briefly froze before pushing Zack off, and that Zack had blackmailed him into one other sexual encounter as well.
