'''Miya''' (ミーヤー) is a ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'' {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}} player with a {{SSBU|Steve}} secondary. He is considered to be the greatest {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}} player of all time, one of the greatest ''Ultimate'' players of all time, tying {{Sm|MkLeo}} with the most ''Ultimate'' major wins, and one of the greatest Japanese players of all time, becoming the best in the second half of 2024. His breakout tournament was winning {{Trn|Kagaribi 8}}, which made him the first and currently the only Mr. Game & Watch player to win a major. He was also ranked 1st on the 26th SP [[Smashmate]] season and is the first player to achieve a rating of over 2,600 on Smashmate.

==Playstyle==
Miya is a defensive Mr. Game & Watch player mainly known for his precision and consistency in his moves, and is one of the few Mr. Game & Watch players to make use of every single move in his kit. He excels at juggling his opponents with neutral and up aerials to keep them in disadvantage for a long time and quickly rack up their percent. Taking advantage of Mr. Game & Watch's floatiness, Miya fearlessly goes for deep edgeguards using back aerial offstage and is able to make it back thanks to up-b's high vertical distance coupled with the ability to airdodge out of it. In niche situations he uses down aerial and and up-b to intercept exploitable recoveries before using back aerial to finish the job. This gives Miya a threatening presence offstage as he fiercely edgeguards his opponents to the point of where they're unable to recover. Miya is also known for his use of [[Chef]] near the ledge, using it to anticipate a ledge option or rack up extra damage and sometimes take his opponent's stock using forward tilt. Unique to him is that he doesn't hesitate to use [[Judge]], a move that Mr. Game & Watch players seldom use, to take an early stock should he get a 9. This has been successful in sets against players such as {{Sm|Hurt}} or {{Sm|Glutonny}}. 

However, Miya tends to struggle when he is in a severe disadvantage, often spamming moves like Judge in desperation to get a 9. He can sometimes be predictable under certain situations due to him using same move patterns such as Chef at the edge of the stage and occasional airdodge after ledge hops. Miya often struggles against {{SSBU|Sonic}} players due to some of Mr. Game & Watch's aerials not being effective enough at reacting to their speedy gameplays. Finally, Miya sometimes overextends in tense situations, leading to him getting counterattacked and losing a stock early due to Mr. Game & Watch's light weight.

==Tournament history==
===Smashmate warrior===
Miya's competitive career began in ''[[Smash 4]]'' playing {{SSB4|Donkey Kong}}. However, he only had one recorded offline appearance, where he placed 65th at {{Trn|Sumabato 27}}. As such, in the offline metagame, Miya received little to no recognition. This trend carried over into the early metagame of ''[[Ultimate]]'', though Miya's performances at his earliest events were better than his sole performance in ''Smash 4''. Despite his notoriety with {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}} later on in his career, Miya actually began his ''Ultimate'' career playing {{SSBU|Joker}}, {{SSBU|Bayonetta}}, and [[Simon (SSBU)|the]] [[Richter (SSBU)|Belmonts]] at these offline events.

Things were different on Japan's online ladder [[Smashmate]]. Though he likely participated in prior seasons, he was first ranked on the ladder in Season 16 of ''Smash 4'', where he was ranked 67th with a score of 1,844. He remained mostly active on the ladder in ''Ultimate'' and was first ranked 5th in Season 5, but for the following seasons he was never ranked higher than that, though he often ranked in the top 20. This changed during the [[COVID-19 pandemic]], when online play became the norm for a few years. This allowed Miya to have greater exposure to Japan's competitive scene, and as such he gradually became a stronger player. Eventually, he reached a score above 2,500 on Smashmate in Season 19, becoming the second player to ever surpass that milestone, and as such was ranked 2nd for that season. The player who first scored above 2,500 and who was also the player ranked above Miya was {{Sm|acola}}, sparking a rivalry between the two.

From then on, Miya remained in the top 8 on Smashmate, often ranking in the top 3. He achieved his first-ever 1st place ranking in Season 21, and has since scored above 2,600 on the ladder, becoming the only player to ever do so.

===First major win and becoming Japan's second prodigy===
With his prowess on the Smashmate ladder, it wouldn't take long for Miya to establish himself in the offline scene as well, though very few expected how quickly it would take Miya to do so. His first notable event in the post-pandemic metagame was the Shikoku edition of {{Trn|Maesuma Offline|Shikoku}}. Though {{Sm|acola}} was also present at the event, he was upset early in bracket and eventually fell to 4th. This gave Miya an opportunity to make a strong impression at his first notable offline event, which was exactly what he did: aside from a game 5 set against {{Sm|Yn}}, Miya was able to cruise through the event, defeating {{Sm|Asimo}} twice along the way, to win his first offline event.

While an impressive victory, Miya's performance at Maesuma Offline was quickly overshadowed a few weeks later. Though a COVID-19 outbreak forced many players to drop out, {{Trn|Kagaribi 8}} remained a major with many strong legacy talent in attendance. As such, many players were shocked to see Miya, the 24th seed at the event, win the entire event without dropping a single set, in a run where Miya defeated {{Sm|ProtoBanham}}, {{Sm|Shuton}}, and {{Sm|Abadango}} twice. Not only did this run make Miya one of the lowest seeds to win an event, but it also became the first major won by a Mr. Game & Watch. The latter was especially surprising, as the best Mr. Game & Watch player at that time, {{Sm|Maister}}, had repeatedly failed to win a major. As such, Miya's victory at Kagaribi 8 made him an immediate contender for Maister's title.

Unfortunately, in what would become a repeating pattern with Miya, he followed up the best performance of his season with the worst performances of his season, as he fell to 49th at {{Trn|Maesuma TOP 9}} after losing to {{Sm|Masha}} and {{Sm|Kome}}, then fell to 17th at {{Trn|Sumabato SP 30}} after losing to {{Sm|Jogibu}} and {{Sm|Shirayuki}}. These performances, taking place over the course of two months, led many North American players to question whether Miya's victory at Kagaribi 8, and thus Mr. Game & Watch's first major victory, was a fluke. 

It wouldn't be until {{Trn|Maesuma TOP 10}}, three months after Miya's first major victory, where he would rebound. After falling to {{Sm|Yoshidora}} in top 16, Miya made an incredible Losers run which included defeating {{Sm|Hero|p=Japan}}, {{Sm|Yaura}}, and Yoshidora in the runback, before bowing out at 2nd after losing to acola in Grand Finals. He then followed it up with several strong superregional performances, which includes winning {{Trn|KOWLOON 3}} defeating both {{Sm|Kome}} and {{Sm|kameme}} twice and winning his first overseas event at {{Trn|Apex 2022}}. These strong performances culminated in his victory at {{Trn|Seibugeki 12}}, where after falling to Losers incredibly early to {{Sm|Tsubaki|p=Shizuoka}}, Miya would once again go on an incredible Losers run, winning a total of 13 sets and defeating kameme, {{Sm|Repo}}, and {{Sm|Umeki}} twice to win his second major. These performances not only made Miya notorious for his long Losers runs, but also challenged the skepticism from the previous months.

Though he had qualified for the {{Trn|Smash World Tour 2022}}, the event was [[Cancellation of Smash World Tour 2022|controversially cancelled]]. As such, Miya was invited to the {{Trn|Scuffed World Tour}}, which was the final event of his season. Although he did not place highly, he was nevertheless able to make a noticeable impact. After 3-0ing {{Sm|Onin}}, Miya faced off against {{Sm|Sparg0}} in a highly-anticipated set, especially as Sparg0 was known for being great against the Mr. Game & Watch matchup thanks to his record over Maister. Miya was able to prove his prowess by going up 2-1, forcing Sparg0 to switch off his {{SSBU|Cloud}} and go {{SSBU|Pyra}} and {{SSBU|Mythra}} instead, where he ultimately defeated Miya 3-2. Miya then lost another game 5 set to {{Sm|Glutonny}} to place 9th; however, this event allowed Miya to showcase his potential to North Americans and was able to convince players that he deserved to be considered one of the best Mr. Game & Watch players. 

With these strong performances in spite of his late start to the season and small slump, Miya was ranked 17th on the half-year [[UltRank 2022]] and 20th on the full-year [[OrionRank 2022]], the highest-ranking player who did not appear on the [[OrionRank Mid-Year 2022]].

===Ascension to the top===
After cementing himself as a top 20 player in 2022, Miya only continued to improve in 2023. For the start of the season, at {{Trn|JAPAN 24}}, Miya saw the debut of a new secondary Steve to mixed success, as it resulted him losing a set against {{Sm|Futari no Kiwami Ah~!}}, however, it did see a strong performance against KEN, forcing him off his Sonic and instead to switch to Sephiroth. Ultimately, Miya placed 2nd at his first major of the year, losing to acola. The start of 2023 itself was rough, as he placed 13th at the recently rejuvenated Umebura series, loisng to {{Sm|Atelier}} and {{Sm|DIO}}, though for the time these two losses weren't so bad. Miya continued the rest of January with decent performances at Superregionals, however saw him with losses to even more players outside the top 20. The real nail in the coffin for Miya was his performance at {{Trn|Kagaribi 9}}, Losing to {{Sm|Jagaimo}} and Sriks for 49th, while also giving him a loss to someone unranked.
