When knocked out of a player, smash coins will bounce a short distance. They can be picked up merely by touching them, but disappear after a short time. Smash coins thrown from a player will not be deducted from their tally, but being [[KO]]'d will cause the player to lose half their coins (to a maximum of 100 in ''Brawl'').

In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee|Melee]]'', there were Gold, Silver, and Copper smash coins, worth ten, five, and one point respectively. In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl|Brawl]]'', the coins were lowered in value to six, three, and one point respectively, but a new item, the '''Smash Bill''', was introduced. Bills flutter and fly erratically, making them difficult to pick up, but they are worth 10 points each.

Smash coins should not be confused with the [[Coins (lottery)|coins]] used for continues and gaining new trophies.
