{{iw|bulbapedia|Rock Smash|move}} is a physical Fighting-type move introduced in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation II}}. It's alternated between {{iw|bulbapedia|TM}} and {{iw|bulbapedia|HM}} status across the series, but has consistently been an important field move up until {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation VII}} phased the concept out in favor of more convenient options. Rock Smash is typically distributed early, being a move to break rocks, allowing players to pass to otherwise inaccessible areas. Breaking these rocks also has a chance to reveal a Pokemon, usually a {{iw|bulbapedia|Geodude}} or {{iw|bulbapedia|Shuckle}}. In battle, Rock Smash originally had base 20 power, but was increased to 40 in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation IV}}. It also has a 50% chance to lower the target's Defense, though this effect is only vaguely replicated in ''Smash'' with its variable damage output. Charizard has been able to learn Rock Smash whenever it's available as a TM or HM across the series.
{{iw|bulbapedia|Rock Smash|move}}, introduced in Generation II, is a physical Fighting-type attack in the {{uv|Pokémon}} games and has alternated between {{iw|bulbapedia|TM}} and {{iw|bulbapedia|HM}} status over time. In battle, it is a generally weak move only having 40 power with a 50% chance of lowering the target's defense; it used to also be able to destroy rocks outside of battle, making it essential in completing many ''Pokémon'' games by clearing obstacles to the player's progression. Breaking rocks is also a way to find Pokémon. Starting from Generation VII however HMs were removed instead replaced by other methods. Charizard has been able to learn Rock Smash by TM or HM from the Generation II games to the Generation VI games.

Rock Smash's ''Smash'' incarnation appears to reference its Generation II incarnation, with the stone shards flying out being reminiscent of its battle animation. However, as of Generation IV, the move is specifically described and animated as a punch, rather than a simple attack, unlike the ''Smash'' version.
