The Records menu is a sub-menu under the Data section that appears in every Smash Bros game so far, enabling the player to view information about various aspects of certain characters ,such as total KOs and the total time that they were used.
In Super Smash Bros.
Overview
In Super Smash Bros., only VS records are stored in the data; unlike later games, other records are not recorded.
As the owners of a copy of a game in the Smash series play said game, various data points are tracked and calculated in the background. That data is then displayed as categories in the Records menu. These categories range from as broad as total playtime and battles fought, to as specific as amount of KOs with a particular attack or Self destructs per character in a specific game mode. None of these statistics are required or even necessary to play the game, but the option to view them is there. The data is tracked perpetually as long as the same save file is used. Wiping a save also wipes all records.

The primary use for the records is for players to track their playing history and deduce their habits. Over time, patterns will inevitably form out of this data. Analytical players can use these patterns to assess their strengths and weaknesses to improve their gameplay. An example of this is a player has relatively low average KOs per battle, primarily kills with smash attacks and is frequently killed by throws. This data can be used to conclude that the player spams smash attacks and is frequently whiff punished, and should train to break that habit. Another example is a player that primarily uses only one fighter does surprisingly well with another fighter in the few times they branched out, inspiring them to pick up this fighter as a secondary.
Battle Score
In the first screen of the VS Records screen, the player is given a spreadsheet of sorts featuring all characters they have. The characters are lined up in order on both the left and top of the screen, based on how many cumulative KOs they have attained throughout gameplay, with a higher number of KOs allowing for a higher place.

The introduction of internet connectivity in Brawl onwards allows developers to track the data of players. The development teams for these games have confirmed this data has dictated post-launch content as well as future entries, such as the results of Elite Smash in Ultimate influencing balance patches.
In the grid next and below the fighters, multiple numbers appear to show how many times the character on the left has KO'd the character on top. In the example in the gallery below, Pikachu has knocked out Ness a total of four times, and he has attained 5 KOs in the total course of the game.

In Super Smash Bros., only records from VS mode are stored in the data; unlike later games, other records are not recorded.

Battle Score
In the first screen of the VS Records screen, the player is given a character to character comparison sheet, showing how many KO's each character has gotten against every other character. The chart is read from the left - in other words, the number indicates how many times the character on the left has KO'd the character on the right. (i.e. In the picture below, Pikachu has knocked out Ness a total of four times, and it has attained 5 KOs in the total course of the game.) In terms of both rows and columns, the characters are ordered based upon their total KO count.

Ranking
Ranking
On this screen, the player is able to analyse various statistics for each character in a table (Again, sorted by number of KO's). These are:
In this menu, the player is able to analyse various use statistics for each character; the categories include the following:

*Win %:The percentage of the characters KOs compared to the combined total.
*Win %, which is a ratio of how many KOs that character has compared to the total amount.
*KOs:How many KOs the character has given.
*KOs, which shows how many cumulative KOs the character has.
*TKO:How many cumulative Falls the character has, including SDs.
*TKO,  which shows how many cumulative Falls the character has, including SDs.
*SD%:The percentage of their Falls that were self destructs.
*SD%, which shows how often the character has accidentally KO'd itself compared to its total TKOs.
*Time:how long, in hours and minutes the player has used that character.
*Time, which shows how many hours and minutes the player has used the character.
*Use %:The percentage of matches in which that character has been used by a player.
*Use %, which shows how often in a ratio against 100 that the player has used the character.
*Avg: The average number of participants that the character plays matches in.
*Avg, which shows how many players (including the character) the character is involved in a match on average. The maximum is 4.0 and the minimum is 2.0

Individual
Individual
This final screen lists various ranks about individual characters, in effect being a combination of the previous two screens, instead comparing individual characters. Damage received and dealt, however, is only shown on this screen.
Individual lists various ranks about individual characters, particularly against other players, such as the characters win percentage (in this case, the ratio of KOing an opponent to being KOed by that opponent), KOs, Falls, and average number of players with the character(s). The 2.0 means that almost every match has 2 players total while the 4.0 means that almost every match has 4 players participating.

Similar to its predecessor, the first page presents a spreadsheet, featuring all the characters they have unlocked. The characters are organized based on how many cumulative KOs they have attained, with a higher number of KOs leading to a higher place on the sheet.
The first screen is identical to that in 64, displaying how many KO's each character has landed on every other character.

On the second page, individual statistics are given for each character separately, while the third page displays the top 5 characters for each statistic. These are:
In the grid next and below the fighters, multiple numbers appear to show how many times the character on the left has KO'd the character on top, and how many times the character on the left has been KO'd by the character on the top.

On the second page, individual statistics are given for each character, while the third page lists the top 5 characters for each stastic, which are shown below:

Once again, the first page is a comparison of KO's given character-to-character. The top four rows are highlighted in red, orange, green and blue, respectively.
The first page is a simple table of KO matchups by character, with the character who performed the KOs on the vertical, and the five most-KOed characters listed horizontally. The top five rows are highlighted in red, orange, green and blue, respectively.

The second, third and fourth page all focus on the same statistics - the second shows the top 5 characters in each stat, whilst the third and fourth show individual stats, by character on the third page, and by player name on the fourth.
The second, third and fourth page focus on the following statistics, with the top five characters on a bar chart and a single stat on screen on the second page ("All Rankings"). The third ("Character Details") and fourth ("Name Details") pages show all these stats for a single character or Name at a time in a scrollable table:

Unlike previous games in the series, there is no character-to-character KO comparison chart. Character statistics are now presented in the form of a vertical bar graph. There are options to select a specific player name, or to keep the focus on a specific character when changing categories.

The first three pages focus on the same statistics - the first one covers all matches, the second one includes offline matches only, and the third one includes online matches only. The stats are as follows:
